Looks like Pelosi is going for impeachment.
I know it needs a two thirds majority to pass but it's better to impeach now and hold McConnell, Graham and the like to their word. If they were to vote against impeachment it would make their words of the last few days meaningless, they would be back to enabling Trump and be complicit with anything he does over the next 2 weeks.
We would see how quickly they would all scuttle back under their rocks, rationalizing that it would be good for the Republicans If the Democrats had to deal with all of the fall out from the traitorous actions in the first few weeks of their term.
The Republican Party owns this, they need to be made to own it. They sucked for 4 years now they have to swallow.
If the Democrats go ahead with impeachment and the Republicans play silly buggers then it could hasten the splitting of the Republican Party. The cowards in the Republican party (99% of the party) need to have their hand forced, saying 'count me out' and admiting that you lied is not enough.
I've also heard that an impeachment effort only needs a majority of one to disbar a person from standing for public office ever again?....which would be nice. The Intel isn't 100% on that one though I think it to be the case, (constitutional expert to the forum, you know who you are).

Trump didn't write the textbook for fascism, the Republican party has spent the last 40 years writing it.
Things you need to do to turn a democracy into a fascist state :
1.
Take control of the media. (Or rewrite legislation to allow opinion to pass as news as happened under Reagan)
2.
Make one section of the population feel 'more American' than others. This is what the Republicans did under Reagan by courting the white evangelicals, giving them the impression they are 'the chosen ones'. We saw this play out in the capitol building, as selfies were taken with police and particularly in the moments right after the shooting when one of the mob texting on his phone gestures dismissively to a policeman who is asking him politely to move as a woman lies dying on the ground, he has a text message to finish after all. The epitome of entitlement, both demanded and granted.
3.
Arm the f***ers, as did Bush when he legalised assault rifles and extended open carry. Without all the guns on display things wouldn't have come to this.
4.
Put democracy up for sale, as was done when limits on individual party donations were removed by pressure from the Tea Party.
Sorry if I've repeated some of these points but they are the fundements of what is going on here, Trump is not an anomaly.

Impeachment will take too long; 25th amendment is the only viable option but won't happen because pence and the requisite number of cabinet members won't propose it.

It’s easy to be glib and offer little more than mere scorn of trump on this thread but I’ve been browsing through the investigative Twitter threads as they examine the pics/videos of the failed capital hill coup and there’s a number of the folk identified who are ex military with current security clearance - The investigation into this failed coup will be hopefully far reaching as I imagine the fbi will want to come out of this with something to show for their efforts, and as a very sobering aside I saw the tweet below, naming and showing the officer who died, two tours of duty in Afghanistan and he is beaten to death with a fire extinguisher due to the lies of the sitting president

Given that Trump was phoning senators trying to get them to continue the obstruction whilst they were cowering under their desks I think we can actually say, and perhaps legally prove he was holding them hostage. The implication is that he was suggesting that he will send out a tweet to call the mob off if the senators acquiesce to his demands.
Remember he tweeted 'stay calm', not 'stand down'.thus keeping the senators trapped as he applied the pressure. Remember also that he refused to call out the National Guard, something Pence allegedly did whilst under siege.
Aaaaaand Twitter has now just shut down the official WhiteHouse @potus Twitter account as he couldn’t keep his frantic stubby thumbs from tweeting further lies and bullshit, give him a speak & spell to keep him amused for the next 12days

I just visited Andrew Sullivan's Twitter feed, he's one of the Dougls Murray, Niall Ferguson types with a huge profile based in America.
Fascinating to see that his posts are full of identity politics, Marxist this, communism that anti BLM guff right up umtill the 6th January. Then He sees the footage of the police quietly ushering in rioters, taking selfies with them and politely holding the door open for them as they leave and he has an epiphany,
On the 7th January he posts this:

Andrew Sullivan is an anti-Trump conservative. He's a critic of the Woke left, that hasn't changed. He's also a critic of the fascist right. I don't agree with a lot of what the anti-Trump conservatives believe, but they deserve some respect for standing up for democracy since Trump arrived on the scene years ago. They didn't just flip to being lefties after seeing the mob storm the Capitol this week.

I pray that Pence has got him on final warning/national suicide watch. His frustration at losing his social media outlets will make him lose his mind and more and more desperate. I hope that the nuclear codes are well secured - from talk from the military chiefs, they've probably quietly issued orders to ignore anything from the President.
All those state, federal and IRS investigators need to be ready to hit him with charges on 21st, or he'll start the "poor me, all out to get me" message. His followers need to see how vile and corrupt he is. Bidens administration need to keep a long arms length from the investigations.

Probably about 15 times every hour when he momentarily forgets he’s been banned, picks up his phone to tweet something, then realises. It’s such a perfect mental image.

There will be a whole bunch of GOP senators thinking that, if he's impeached and convicted, he will not be able to run for any public office again. There's a good chance he will want to run again in 2024, and no GOP politician wants that, but they are too chickenshit to say it out loud. They will be calculating whether it's better to just get one difficult vote over with, or to hope he somehow disappears on his own.
On top of that, some of Trumps loyal followers are apparently confused about why he didn't send in the military to arrest Nancy Pelosi, etc. once the insurrection began. He told people to turn up and they thought he was going to actually launch a coup. Now that he's issued a half-arsed concession, they feel betrayed. The GOP senators might be willing to take the chance of finishing him off if they think his support is wavering. Now that he's lost his Twitter and Facebook accounts, he's going to be much easier to just ignore.
