The TV remote is poorly, and yes I've tried new batteries.

I've ordered a replacement but in the meantime I have tried a few apps.

They all work OK with one minor exception. I can't turn the thing on. I can turn it off via all the apps but the same button will not turn it on.

Any thoughts?

When they’re off, they tend to be “off” so aren’t connected to wifi and Bluetooth is shut down so there’s no means of the device connecting with your tv

Our Samsung uses Infra red led in the remote to turn on but not for any other functions, so you may be stuck unless you have another remote with ir that can be pared or hdmi device that will power on the TV when it's switched on.

How "smart" is your TV? My Samsung TV can be turned on and off via Google Home.

Ahhh, sussed it.

The infra red is on the back of the phone so if I hold the phone up and point the back at the telly the 'On' button then works.

What apps are you all using? Sony used to have one but it was discontinued

There is always the fall back of...

... Getting off your arse and turning it on...

We have been doing that for years since the power button on the remote stopped working.

Admittedly i than also had to replace the power button on the tv...

Not always - I have a similar problem to the OP in that my Apple TV does everything I need other than switching the elderly LG Tv on. I’m fairly sure after a cursory look that the tv doesn’t have a power button (at least not one accessible by fingering around the perimeter of it) so I need to keep the daft motion sensor remote that came with the set for power duties

For LG TVs.  This remote works for both our LG TVs. No tuning etc needed.

@petrieboy see my comment 5 up from here.

As for apps I tried a few, ended up using the LG app, no adverts and no cc details asked for.
