Apart from pointing it in the direction of the transmitter, is there anything particularly 'technical' about installing a new TV aerial?

Stick it in the loft.
Find where you are on a map, and were transmitter is. Get a compass and prat about for hours untill you get it right.

Bolt it to the rafters in the loft, look outside at where all the other roof mounted ones are pointing and fix it in roughly the same direction. Thats all I did and it's been fine...but it will depend on how close you are to the transmitter. Being able to point it at the Winter Hill transmitter helps in my case. My only glitch was when adding a second fixed ariel socket in the bedroom, I needed to fit a powered booster in the loft to get the freeview box to work, even being so close to a transmitter. Aparently it will be better when they switch to digital proper coz the signal strength will increase....we'll see.

Look at surrounding houses and point in same direction and mount in similar fashion if signal is weak.
