My lodger eats convenience food only, including many microwave curries, which he microwaves per the instructions, i.e. 6-8 minutes for a meal that in reality requires 2-3 minutes.

My previously new shiney microwave now stinks of curry, as does the kitchen any time you use it to heat anything.

When he goes, should I give it to him as a leaving gift and buy a new one out of his deposit?

yes, but you should start stealing things off him to the value of the microwave now

General wear and tear. He's not doing anything wrong.
Clean the microwave or buy a new one but you can't withhold his deposit or a portion of it

yes of course he used the equipment in the house for what it was inteded for so it is their fault...surley the carpet is worn where they walked and the setter has sagged?

Fair wear and tear surely and hardly inappropriate usage

Have you considered cleaning it?

Cleaning it doesn't help.

I can see his POV (wear and tear) but it's a PITA, he's an untidy unclean ****er in every area bar his bedroom, where he generally lives. I might just ask him to move on, or are they all the same?

You have asked the wrong question.

He is your lodger/flatmate, it's a different relationship to landlord and tenant. For a start, you don't have to give 24hrs notice to go around to the house.

I know it's awfully colonial of me, but why not just say.

"terribly sorry to bring this up what ho, but you don't need to heat those confounded microwave meals for so long, they stink the place up, and how about eating some real food with vegetables, awfully sorry"

OR, you could buY another microwave and write "FOR CYNIC_AL USE ONLY"

Already said it Hels, after I'd noticed the problem (I'd not anticipated it). He doesn't listen/take heed/care.

A bowl of water and lemon juice on full power for 5 mins should sort the whiff

Phone his mother and complain. If that doesnt work, a strongly worded letter to the Daily Mail.
