I’m looking for some easy route options across the peaks that would ideally allow me to use the train to get to the start. So possibly starting somewhere like grindleford and returning to somewhere like Macclesfield or further north towards Stockport or Manchester.
im familiar with loops in the Edale area but have never explore further afield. Any pointers would be gratefully received 🙏
I live in Sheffield and periodically get the train from Dore to Chinley and ride home. Plenty of variations available, but generally over the Churn and down to Hayfield; Snake Path or Coldwell Clough then over Jacob’s Ladder; Jaggers Clough; (dick around on Win Hill); down to Bamford; up Hurstclough Lane and Stanage; back down the slabs; Green Drive or Cannings; back down through Blacka and home.
I've done the same from the other side. New Mills out to Bamford / Hathersage area and ride back. Did a nice one a few weeks back; train to Edale then along Edale Road in the direction of Hope, up Jaggers Clough to Hope Cross, turned right down to Aston / Thornhill, over Shatton Moor and descend into Bradwell, round the back of the cement works, into Castleton, up Broken Road then Rushup Edge, Roych Clough, Mount Famine, South Head and down to Hayfield.
Big day out actually but you could chop off bits of it or get the train further into the Peak and maybe start from Bamford straight up onto Shatton Moor for example.
I live right on the edge of the Peak in Totley and the above suggestions are all very good. You can also take a more southerly route out via Moss Road to Longshaw, then head south via the eastern edges to the far end of Baslow Edge and head down Bar Road into Baslow itself.
From there I usually cross the river and go up Bramley Lane then take one of the various options over High Rake and the open cast mine workings. It’s then a matter of heading more north via Foolow, Hucklow (Great and Little) and either head for Hope station or if you want to go further, head for Dirtlow Rake and head west for the Pennine Bridleway and Roych Clough which will take you down to Chinley station.
