I think that you can open it manually with any .zip compatible archive software (7zip, winrar ect)by changing the extension to .zip or using the 'open with' option.

Hi, yes i've managed that but its then got loads of files with even stranger extensions that I can't read (such as .sdlxiff)! Apparently its only ten words that need translating, looks like we need the special software..

If you just need to process the file and pass it on then take a look at Okapi Rainbow. If you need to add the translation yourself then try out OmegaT, although if it's only a few words you could generate an xliff from Rainbow and edit it by hand.
