2 questions really though both closely related:

I've a 10mm flat t&e (so i assume 2.5^2) runs to my garage. It's carrying nothing According to my induction tester thing.

Having stuck my head under the floor where it enters the house i can sight the cable running back to what looks like the main rising point for the first floor, at which point it disappears into the fabric of the wall.

At the consumer unit is a "tail" of similar cable, also indicating nothing on my tester thing. (There is also a bigger one but damned if i know where that goes).

Ideally i want to have the cable connected to the consumer unit and a fresh ring run into the garage, for which i will be getting a spark in, but...

I don't know any sparkies to come have a look for the price of a beer and if the existing cable isn't one and the same I'll live without - no desire to be ripping the walls apart to run cables - so i want to check if it is the same cable before paying a for someone to come out (to do the connections.)

Anything wrong with the following plan:

Throw switch on consumer unit - best i can tell the cable is connected to nothing but I'd rather not find out the hard way.
Bridge the live/neutral at one end.
Stick continuity tester across the other.

Assuming the above is fine and it gives a reading...

How much can i expect for a new connection to the consumer unit (there's space for another mcd or what ever they're called) and a pair of double gang sockets with integrated rcd installing?

Cheers
