Does anyone know if anywhere in the UK sells a simple tow bar cycle rack similar to the ones I've seen in New Zealand.

Basically a metal pole that fits direct over the ball and is then secured with a grubber screw.

Simple and very effective.

ahh no, they bolt on.

Thule do a cheap one but it has 2 straps t secure it to your boot lid as well.

This is a cheaper version: http://www.halfords.com/cycling/accessories/cycle-carriers-bike-racks/avenir-kansas-2-bike-towball-fitting-rack

The Thule 970 is rubbish. I found the unit moved on the ball causing the bikes to rub onto the bumper of my car. The carrier just clamps down and isn't secured in any way.

If you have a bolt on tow ball I would look at the maxx racks.

I've got a Maxx Raxx one, 4*4 version (off-set for the spare wheel). You need a bolt on towball. Unbolt it and fit a small length of pipe, then the towball goes back on. The when you wnat to use the bike rack, it drops onto the pipe. Works a treat, plus the arms fold down for torage when it's in the house/shed/garage. I'd be looking at one again if I was after another rack

Thanks for the replies but still not what I'm after.

Pipe fits over towing ball, secured by a threaded bolt.

Got a Thule 9708, bloody brilliant.
Drops on the ball, tighten bolt, secure.

We know none of those are not the one you linked to. But as you can't find the one you linked to they are the best available here in the UK.

An alternative, if you're after a cheap and easy rack is one of these for £15

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CAR-TOWBALL-MOUNTED-FOLDING-2-CYCLE-BIKE-CARRIER-TOW-BALL-TOWBAR-BICYCLE-RACK-/201295402318?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2ede24154e

works very well, folds up neatly, can be fitted in 3 seconds. A liberal dashing of pipe insulation to protect the frame though. It's very secure, surprising amount of clamping force from the scissor action.

The two stubby arms folder over flush, then the two arms fold together. To clamp the bottom wraps itself round the ball as you open the big arms out. Its hard to explain, but I saw a friend had one and it's just perfect for taking one or two bikes short trips when I dont want to get the big atera 4x rack out.
