Can't get my head around this one - if England lose, can we qualify (of course assuming France lose too).

Can't find anywhere that has worked it out - is it goals scored or goal difference (of course we are equal head-to-head).

My brain hurty.

I have not applied any thought other than knowing draw is good enough but last night was interetsing. that could have gone all sorts of ways that you would never have considered.

Rooney will play, he won't play as well as carrol or wellbeck or wallcot and so we will lose becasue he'll be dragging the rest of the team down. Listening to him in press conferences he seems so ingenuine its untrue. He'll get subbed n throw a paddy i reckon.

Plus the ref will have been contacted by some ukrainian gangsters and told he can have his wife and kids back when the ukrain are through. Footballs big business. Probably.

edit: i'm sure the prematch build up will cover all possible eventualities, can't you just wait till then?

That was what got me thinking.

And if we are 1-0 down and France are losing I want to know if I should be excited or not!

There are just two quarter-final places remaining to be filled on the final night of group action on Tuesday when France, England and Ukraine will bid to follow the Czech Republic, Greece, Germany, Portugal, Spain and Italy into the last eight. UEFA.com explains what each of the three Group D hopefuls must do to make the knockout phase.

The permutations below are for information only; the official calculations will be made by UEFA after the games finish according to article 8.07 & 8.08 of the Regulations of the UEFA European Championship, 2010–12 competition.*

Group D: Tuesday

Sweden (0) v France (4), England (4) v Ukraine (3)

• England will be through with a draw. If they lose, they have to hope France lose by enough so that England at least end level with Les Bleus on goal difference and goals scored (as England have a superior coefficient, 33.563 to France's 30.508).

• Ukraine will be through with a win and out with any other result.

• France will be through with a draw. If they lose, they would only be out if England lose but at the same time move level with them on either goal difference or goals scored.

• Sweden are out.

If England lose, they also need for France to lose and concede a GD of 2 or more.

Rooney to lose his temper and Gerrard won't have the pace to get to him before the ref 😀

out is fine
big win, leading to a QF on sunday is fine

a pants win or a draw that puts us through to play spain on saturday evening is not fine. not at all. my cousins missus will be unimpressed if a football match takes over her wedding reception.

Big win it is. Rooney will be fine, hes the new Pele dontchaknow.

In short if we lose and the frogs win or draw we are out, but if the frogs have a worse result than us we are through.

PS: Wayne has a shocking record at international tournaments he must be aware of this and know what he needs to do but I don’t think the hype helps him. I would have been playing it down if I was the gaffer and diverting the attention to something else (mind games are as much for your own players as the opposition).

agree uwe-r, expect that Roy having been in touch with AlexF will have a pretty good idea how to get the best of Rooney

he evidently thinks that allowing him access to Brit media and talking him up, while nailing his feet to the planet...... time will tell, but if he has a shocker the public will be out of patience with him and he will be out with the rest of the old guard

There seems to be a general assumption that England will get though, I'm not so sure. Ukraine with a huge local support will be difficult to beat.

I agree allthepies - it will be a very tough test - I am not particularly hopeful.

But saying that, I am praying for us to be runners-up and play on Saturday - already have an all-dayer for my mate's 40th birthday planned and a good game of footie halfway through the session will be just perfect.

What I couldn't figure out last night was how Italy were above Spain when Italy were 1-0 up and Spain were still 0-0. Apparently goal diff is out the window and it's down to the number of goals scored. Yet Italy had scored 3 and Spain 5. Don't see the sense in that. Some might argue it encourages more goals but methinks not.

Not really, would just prefer to have an England match to watch on Saturday in the pub. I wouldn't expect us to win - I am realistic - I have seen it all before several times.

A tough test agreed but if our defence plays at 50% of the sum of its parts (if you get what I mean) this should be a walk in the park. 3rd game in row for Terry & Lescott who should be able to keep tabs on 34(?) year old Shevchenko who they both know well enough.

I also think the adverse atmosphere could help England, apathy has been a problem in the past.

PS: Ashley Young to have a stinker and the old England Left side problem to raise its ugly head.

Well, everyone on this thread seems to. I include you in that, or why would you waste your time posting?

Spacemonkey,
goal difference still matters more than goals scored, but its second to the result between two tied teams.
Its just that when the three teams were tied on 5 pts, they get treated as a "mini-league" of the results between themselves to seperate them. they all beat Ireland, but not each other.
So spain's GD of +4 against Ireland doesn't get counted, likewise Croatia's 3-1, and Italy's eventual 2-0. At that point, they were all tied for GD between each other (all draws) so goals scored (within the "mini league") was the next deciding factor. Italy's two draws were 1-1, wheras spain were drawing 0-0.

They better go through. I have been working during the last two matches and again for this one. I would like to at least have a chance to watch one England game.

Tonight's game will be tough. Ukraine are a good team, with home support and a significant goal threat. They're 3-1 with some bookies which, for me, is overpriced.
But, if England do go through, I'd be less worried about betting on them against Spain. The odds will go the other way, but in this tournament, Spain haven't been as impressive. They don't carry the same goal threat without Villa, and try to play the "Spanish way" but aren't anywhere near as dangerous as their club sides- no Messi, no Ronaldo. They're good, but not as strong as their reputation.
And I'd like to see Pique and Biscuits try to handle Carroll and Rooney. 😆

a colleague told me that the venue for tonights match, being in the Russia end of Ukraine, has very little local support. Apparently they played a qualifier there and the home fans didnt stop booing for 90mins

Spain play an uncompromising possession game which can result in very few chances actually being created. Its still hard to play against though as you have to defend with out error for long periods of the game and the frustration creeps in. 0-0 at full time would not be a bad bet on any Spain game.

@loum: Ta, makes sense now (mathematically anyway). Really don't know why UEFA have to invent that 'rule' though. Just stick to GD FFS.
