MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
...and though it's not finished yet it seems to work :o)
Has anyone else experimented with these?
I kind of made it up as I went along based on what materials I could find. Can't help thinking that there must be some design rules that govern how effective these things are.
Will post some (shockingly poor) photos shortly...
A what?
*goes off to check google...
There will be photos shortly.
Beer involved? Love it!
Top banana! 😀
That is ace!
that's pretty cool, what's it insulated with? cat litter?
for once it is deserved
AWESOME
Very nice ... just don't burn down the house. 😯
Insulation is vermiculite.
Supposedly best because it's a good thermal insulator, which means more of the heat goes up and into whatever you're trying to heat, rather than into the body of the stove.
If you were looking to heat a space with it you could use sand instead I think.
That'll never take off ffs. How far were you expecting it to go ?
Design rules on these are pretty simple:
3:1 ratio of height to width
Maintain cross sectional area
Stick a grate at the bottom (to provide and insulating air gap).
It is awesome, no doubt about that. What's your reason for building one? For fun? or cooking outside? Or a patio heater type thing?
Does anyone know how much hotter they get than just a plain bonfire due to the insulation and air draw effect?
What's the idea behind it? As in, what's it for?
heating the kitchen by the look of it.. can i buy them ikea??
How much faster is your kitchen now?
That looks quality mate. Im gonna post a pic of my bbq later that you will like! Good work.
Looks mental, would it work for cooking on?
That is well cool and puts me home made camping stove to shame, but I have to ask - does it actually have a purpose?

The initial plan was to make a solid fuel stove for camping*, but it's turned out too big and heavy for that.
There are a number of design flaws with mine as it stands, not least:
1) How do you put a pan on top of it without choking of the exhaust?
2) Despite weighting the bast with stones, it's too unstable - with a pan of water on top I reckon a gust of wind would blow it over
3) Not enough insulation; the outer skin still gets too hot to touch
Cynic - yours looks a lot more practic-al!
Good mo' by the way. Mine isn't as neat.
*read as: the other half is away for the weekend and I wanted to play with fire
1. you'll need an elevated grid I suppose.
2, 3, fair enough.
I think you should leave it in the shed then bring it out for barbies 😀
And thanks re tache - I have to dye it, otherwise it's really blonde 😛 (not ginger 😡 )
You have made your own Kelly Kettle! Have used them camping in the past, bit heavy really but loads of fun, especially for those that like watching fire!
Liking the home made version!
