Looking for a winter jacket for everyday use, not for biking.
Anybody got a Tog24 Orlov?
Are they any good?
No.
cheers
+1 cheap tat always being sold discounted IME.
It's not one that I'd consider. Plenty of good stuff out there, I'd go for Mountain Equipment, Rab, North Face Summit Series or similar.
I used to manage a couple of their stores. Worked for them for around 5 years. They used to maufacture quite a bit of the stuff themselves (along with other more 'reputable' brands). The stuff they made themselves was actually quite good. I've got a 10 year old Gore-Tex jacket and a 12 year old Entrant G2 that are still OK. They then turned (tried to turn) a bit more 'high steet' and began selling imported snowboard jackets & trousers and more casual wear. I thought this was rubbish - not great quality, poor fitting etc... At the same time they seemed to become more expensive.
Having left the company, I've never been back to buy anything from them.
buy cheap buy 3-4 times.
get a Rab or similar. had mine 18years and the down has held it's loft and pertex outer still in one piece. cost £150 then which was expensive at the time. worth every penny.
Depends really. If you want to walk the dog in it and/or just generally wear it to keep warm/dry whilst walking to the pub/shops/wherever I'm sure it'll be fine.
If you want to walk up a mountain in it (or look like a person that walks up mountains), then ME, Rab, NF etc might be better.
Yeah, chuck £300 on a Rab one, it must be better. Says RAB on it.

Above is a cracker
I have an old Tog24 coat that is really great quality, had it about ten years and it's still going strong. Only sign of wear is where my keys have rubbed the coating off the pocket lining a bit. Easily as good as the more fancy expensive outdoorsy stuff I have, and was a total bargain.
Bought a soft shell fleece thing recently. Keeps me warm when waiting for a taxi after the pub, but if I were buying something for proper outdoorsy mountainy use I'd probably be able to justify spending a bit more. But for general kicking about town, £30 cheap and cheerful makes more sense to me than £90 super technical uber fabric, five red-sock recommended in TGO Magazine type of stuff.
