Six months a go I was told my post was to disappear under a reorganisation and I would be made redundant. As I was about a month from resigning you can imagine my joy at the prospect of a pay-off which was quite handsome after 34 years service. And I get a pension and retain some other benefits. A very lucky (middle aged) boy indeed!

So today I had a short lie in, received a nice txt from Markenduro (told him to get back to work;-)) and then went for a 105k in glorious sunshine on my Roadrat. Cafe was quiet and I enjoyed a lovely caramel slice at Breedon-on-the-Hill. This afternoon packed my bags for a 3 week trip to the USA with Mrs B.

Already I feel less stressed and not as tired as I have recently and really looking forward to the future. First big aim is the Tour Divide in 2011. May tour it see as I do not have any reason to be back in a hurry.

A chance to live the dream.....

Farewell (for 3 weeks) suckers!

Good for you mate!

I have another 25 years to go before I retire and I reckon it will be pants when I retire because I will end up having to take a part time job as a paper boy to make ends meet 🙁

We are now in the golden age of retirement.

Thanks for the positive comments:-)

Most of my generation KNOW how lucky we are in general. When I started work the Sex Pistols were the big band in town with Anarchy in the UK. Not long after the 3 day week etc. and the future was not rosy.

Grants for university students, though I did not go - too fick, affordable housing and final salary pensions were far more available. My first house cost £7,500 and I was earning ~£3k. Most of us who have stayed in work will be able to retire at 60-65 and do OK. My daughter is 25 and suspect she is going to have a problems likea lot of young people. Her best investment choice is probably to wait until I keel over.

A few of my investments came off and I have done OK, so now to enjoy the next few years of getting some BIG rides in.

I accepted a package today as well. It wasnt in my script but things at work went a bit mad and as a solution they offered me a decent package. Working until December ( lots of it from home) and then Im done. Weird feeling. But they will include my C2W bike ( bought this month) in the deal.:-)

And I reckon I needed a kick up the ass to get out there anyways....

Good for you fella. Enjoy it

I've just taken a look at my private pension statement. From that I can gleam that I'll be able to retire comfortably in a cardboard box just underneath a bridge on the A6 at the tender age of 137. I'll have 70pence a week to spank on Werthers Originals

I lasted 6 weeks before getting back to a job (albeit one with less stress etc).

Well done, good luck etc.

My only real question is how much do you need a year to be happy on . I am still a few years away - but kids are now moving on to university, so the edn is in sight - guess now have to look at the next few years as the time to save for the rain days

You lucky, lucky barsteward! I've done 37 years (so far) and there's no sign of them wanting to let me go yet 😥
