Depends if by 'in the clear' you actually mean 'guilty of handling stolen goods'?

I suspect he'll be telling his "mate" it was stolen if there is a problem?

He should just cut the lock and wait - it'll go soon enough and if it doesn't put a sign on it saying "For Sale - £100" it will definately go then!
