I'd like to make a couple of predictions regarding this and STW, if I may
:
1. a duplicate thread in the bicycling thread within the week
2. a feature on the front page saying it's awsum, but pricey.
thanks
wireless seat post appeals to me more than wireless drivechain.
For a start if you run out of battery the seatpost will still work.

What stops the drivechain from working?

Well, in one position at any rate:
If the battery does die, you can’t adjust it manually.
Is wireless actually an advantage if it just means more batteries to charge?
If i wanted electronic shifting/seatposts, I think i'd rather have ONE battery and some wires, rather than multiple batteries and no wires. Remembering to charge things is a pain.
So if I bunged it on my e bike it would wirelessly charge the batteries like you can with your mobile phone right?
Remembering to charge things is a pain.
+1.
Bike lights and a gps. OK, that's tolerable.
Anything else for me, probably not. But, then I'm a techno-luddite still using a KCNC seatpost, rather than a dropper.
The comment in the article about it going to sleep to save battery until it's jiggled around, so if you take it in the car, you should remember to take the battery out or you will shorten the battery life....erm, OK then.
I wonder how battery life is affected by cold weather?
Feel good factor? Exactly my point. If you feel your life will be improved by spunking £700 on something that offers absolutely no benefit over something at a fraction of the price (with already known reliability issues) then go ahead. Doesn’t mean I’m not right.
You're right about the utter pointlessness and vacuousness of spending tons of money on widgets that make no real difference to life. But you're wrong about it being an MTBing phenomenon! See golf, hifi, cars, cameras, handbags, shoes etc etc etc etc. There's a certain type of person who will salivate over expensive shit regardless of what shop window it's in.
There’s a certain type of person who will salivate over expensive shit regardless of what shop window it’s in.
I resemble this remark.
It's too expensive, so I wouldn't consider buying it. However, if it was programmable so that you could preset different heights along with electronic damper settings, I could imagine it being worth it for serious racers. For example, on road climbs you'd want your saddle right up and suspension very stiff, on fast XC stuff maybe the saddle down half an inch and the dampers less stiff, then for descents, the saddle much lower and the dampers open. So basically a 3 or 4 position switch and the saddle positions and damper settings programmable for different circuits and personal preferences.
But you’re wrong about it being an MTBing phenomenon!
Sorry, that paragraph wsn't directed at you.
You're right though, I suppose it's just easier to see from the inside, look at how much golfers spend on the latest and greatest clubs, fittings and all sorts of nonsense. Every sport has the thick end of the wedge, this is just ours.
It is expensive and, probably, something I would have. To compare it more with other expensive things...
A Titleist TS2 Driver is £499 RRP. You'd use it, maybe, 10-12 times in a round. A dropper you'll use a lot more than that..
What would you do with the now redundant holes in your frame?!
If you're spunking £700 on a seatpost then Swarovski crystals would do nicely
Pah! Just wait till I bring out my seatpost & gear system that works on thought process. All you say is, ‘saddle down/up’ or ‘gear up/dpwn’. Not even any buttons to press.
You’ll see.
Sorry for the pedantry but what you described was voice activation. I'm pretty sure my Go-Pro has that functionality and I know my TV and Google Home stuff does so thats pretty easy to implement. Whether I could manage a clear vocal instruction when I am blowing out my arse is debatable.
If they open up the control you could replace a MIPS liner with one of these and really use thought control https://www.amazon.co.uk/OCZ-NIA-Neural-Impulse-Actuator/dp/B00168VU4U
Its a brave new world out there!
However, if it was programmable so that you could preset different heights along with electronic damper settings, I could imagine it being worth it for serious racers.
Yep and you could set it up to automatically change settings at certain points in the lap.
A dropper you’ll use a lot more than that..
Really? If you're doing that amount of adjusting you're not doing it right IMO
The seatpost would be worth more than my bike, which is worth more than my current car. I think my priorities may be a bit mixed up 😀
As a sport, we must be some of the worst consumerism driven keep up with the Jones’s idiots out there. The saddest thing is people just don’t care and find all sorts of tenuous reasons to justify this shallow crap.
Call down. You don't have to buy it nor to worry about what OTHER people do with their money. Unless of course if you have a chip on your shoulder.
Except that this affects everyone.
The more people decide to buy pointless toss marketed at the gullible by shysters, the more it impacts the rest of us.
Prices rise, standards become ever more short lived and bikes become obsolete far quicker.
And I have a chip on each shoulder. Chips are cheap. 🙂
Really? If you’re doing that amount of adjusting you’re not doing it right IMO
Uum, I think it depends where you ride? I'm guessing a canal towpath is your usual haunt?
The Malvern Hills, however, have lots of short descents followed by a quick climb and repeat etc etc. Just adjusting the post an inch or 2 can be really useful..
Really? If you’re doing that amount of adjusting you’re not doing it right IMO
I must use my dropper literally hundreds of times a ride, not really sure what I'm not doing right?....
Does anyone remember when spunking large amounts of cash on useless toss was viewed as something foolish and slightly idiotic, rather than something to be proud of?
It’s a good job people like me spend seemingydaft amounts on high end bits. It means there’s a source of second hand high end bits for those with less disposable income/more self control.
If you got it, you might as well spend it on fancy toys.

I can see the benefit of it - I don't always like to ride with a dropper, especially if I've got a bag on the post so being able to whip it off and stick a normal post in there without the faff of cables would be handy. I did contemplate a Magura version but having had Magura brakes in the past I'm never buying their products again..
Also, my Di2 lasts ages on a charge as did my Etap so I can't see this being any worse. £700 is pretty spendy but as per normal it'll eventually come down in price - Etap has.
Cycling is the new golf innit? Full of flash types in it for the status symbols.
Imagine if it could be hacked and someone could mess with the control 😉
more wireless waves through our bodies. Poor nature. 🙁
I’ve got a roll of aluminium foil you can have, it’s not just those ‘wireless waves’ you need to worry about, there’s cosmic radiation, background radiation from granite, neutrons passing straight through you, the Earth, and everything else!
Be afraid, be very afraid!
Really? If you’re doing that amount of adjusting you’re not doing it right IMO
Maybe if you have a hour fireroad climb into a non-stop descent (lucky canadians).
IF you're pedaling, it should be up (either fully up or with a little bit of drop on flat single track); if you're stood up, it should be down. Half mast has some occasional use. If you aren't doing this you're wasting it (money and weight) IMO.

I’m probably missing something really obvious here, but can you not just use the dropper post without, you know, dropping it?
Call down. You don’t have to buy it nor to worry about what OTHER people do with their money. Unless of course if you have a chip on your shoulder.
Who's upset? I'm not, just voicing an opinion. No need to throw round insults unless something I said struck a nerve?
Uum, I think it depends where you ride? I’m guessing a canal towpath is your usual haunt?
No, I just have my post set at a sensible height for the riding I'm doing. If it's a big up then I adjust it otherwise I put it back down. I tend not to obsess over what height my post is at and just get on with riding my bike as people managed to do for years before. Crazy, innit?

You are. No.

And yes, there is an obvious design solution here.

Oh, balls. I didn't know there were RULES. Why didn't someone tell me!
We got back from a ride last weekend and I tried to pop my son's dropper back up and it was stuck down. I asked him if he'd noticed - no! He never tried to raise it... Waster!
Although, to be fair, he was using a dropper post I bought for me, on a bike I bought for me so I'm not sure how this contravenes the DPR (dropper post rules).
I tend not to obsess over what height my post is at and just get on with riding my bike as people managed to do for years before. Crazy, innit?
Always amazed the amount of passive aggression some people put into their posts. I wonder why?
people managed to do for years before.
We 'managed' without a lot of things for 100's of years before they were invented...
You're all completely mad.
I spent £700 recently on a bit of lead to wrap around my chimney and some blobs of mortar. Utterly useless as it turned out.
I also spent same amount in council tax over the last few months.
I may also have an evening with Kelly and her curious but liberated bisexual friend, Donna - but they're only after the money, not my charm. But:
It's my money!
So WHY THE ANGER?!
AAAAAAAARGH!!!

We ‘managed’ without a lot of things for 100’s of years before they were invented…
Cast your mind back... maybe 35 years... it's the late 80s.. someone has brought out an overpriced seatpost. You spy it in the back of MTBUK World Monthly. £700 of my Pounds! For a seatpost!
"Here love, they've got a seatpost out for 700bleedingquid!"
"That's nice dear"
the end.
Anyone seen how long the "baseplate" is that sticks out the bottom to protect the valve and vent thingy? Trying to work out the true total length of the post.
I tend not to obsess over what height my post is at and just get on with riding my bike as people managed to do for years before.
Hmm, OK. I guess you're still riding a penny farthing then like, you know, people did years before?
Maybe you should stop reading too much into this. I already said I'm not upset in the slightest, it was an honest point. I'm sorry you all disagree with my opinion so much you feel the need to accuse me of being passive aggressive or having a chip on my shoulder. Believe me, if I was having a go you would know about it.
Still waiting for a benefit over a standard Reverb that justifies the cost.
For ****s sake this place never changes. Enjoy the £700 koolaid whilst you have your circlejerk, I'm sure you will be enriched beyond your wildest dreams.
£700 and you can't even fit a saddle bag to it
Oh, balls. I didn’t know there were RULES. Why didn’t someone tell me!
Every one of my local trails has been ridden by a tubby bloke on a singlespeed. Doesn't mean that there isn't an approximate set of rules (or rather guidelines) on how to use my geared bike to ride them.
If I jumped on one of those fancy Scott's with 5 extra levers on the bars I'd probably forget to use them at first too.
Does it go down automatically? or do I still have to try and sit down on entry to an unexpected rough DH section.
I’m sorry you all disagree with my opinion so much you feel the need to accuse me of being passive aggressive or having a chip on my shoulder. Believe me, if I was having a go you would know about it.
I have no qualms against any of this or anyone, it's just nice to see brexit knocked off the top spot - but come on, you've got to hold your hands up and chuckle at that post 🙂
I’m probably missing something really obvious here, but can you not just use the dropper post without, you know, dropping it?
You are. No.
Don’t leave me hanging man. What is it I’m missing? Does your saddlebag weigh the same as a small moon and cause the dropper to not work?
