Quick browse on here at lunchtime (Safari)

2hrs go to my phone to check messages and it’s bloody hot and dead

Borrow a charger and recharge. Safari has eaten the battery , and the only website open was STW

I hadn’t left the screen on

So why did STW eat my battery and shorten the life of my iPhone when I wasn’t using it 🤨

All the ads on a free account, perhaps? How much data was used?

Data - not checked as I’m on unlimited, to be fair it said something about trying to get an internet connection to download and that’s what used the battery.

Reception isn’t great in the office, but this is the first time this has happened

What's eaten your battery?

STW's nibbles, bits and bytes.

Android phone here. (premium phone with latest android) This place not only rapes my battery and data... The ads force my phone volume so that any bluetooth music playing at the time cuts to below half in volume. There are so many obtrusive ads it's almost unreadable on chrome mobile app

I know I know.. "Pay a subscription" ? as *bleat* all the brainwashed full members on any thread complaining about how terrible this place actually is Sorry. But. Not a chance! Singletrack themselves publish zero content of interest to me at all. So other than maybe one or two user created threads each week and the stickied PSA, thread there's nothing worth reading here. I'd gladly buy any helpful user a pint to say thanks. But sod financially supporting such a terribly run site.

You phone hunting for a signal can demolish your battery, i know you say it hasn’t happened before but I’m sure it’s not the first time you’ve looked at the forum from their too.

If the phone is out of signal then a) constantly searching for connections will rinse the battery and b) the only way it can be site-related is if it's static content (which it could be of course, IDK).

Autoplay videos is often a setting in the browser.

Well, you know the obvious answer - get back under your bridge where there’s no signal, then you’ll have nothing to bleat and whine about.

Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, nobody’s going to miss you.

When dealing with trolls who clearly have an overwhelming sense of inadequacy, I don’t need to.

By the way, what do you want to be when you grow up?

Im saying I think something has changed. Something caused STW to keep running and calling for data in the background where as it’s not before.

The other weird think is that on Car Play a couple of days back, again even though STW wasn’t open but CarPlay came up with STW as an option to play

I’ve already moaned in the past that it’s impossible to listen to music on Bluetooth speaker and browse STW, but this is another level of STW taking over the world .

If it was on purpose I’d almost commend STW, but we all know it’s by accident and incompetence

It's mostly about paying the bills I guess but it's more demanding and intrusive than most sites advertising which strikes me, and perhaps you, as odd.

I really should just pay, but how interesting are you guys these days?

That is a little odd a temporary fix would be to close you browser, I’ll mention the obscurity though.

Don't need to close browser. Just leave this site.Bluetooth is fine again the second you do. Ithe issue is not with the browser.

If no signal or poor signal, your phone will be trying to get an improved signal and that can eat battery (the poor signal wasn't mentioned in the first post, so I didn't suggest that, but that will have a real impact on battery, especially if you are trying to do something at the time i.e. something needing data).

As for the Free members asking why should they give money when it is so bad - without the ads, it is nowhere near as bad so is a much better experience. Entirely up to you if you do or don't pay the digital subscription fee to get ad free, but if you aren't going to, there is very little point moaning about the experience as the ads pay for the site, so the best option would be to pay for a digital subscription, but there are other ways to not get the ads (not using the site is also an option, but the information here tends to be worth visiting for, so I'd argue not using it isn't really a good option).

My iphone has a habit of eating the battery randomly, even after all the apps/tabs are closed. I actually find restarting the darn thing does a much better job of killing off hidden background task & saving the battery.

Yes in this thread

How else do you capture feedback from people who just visit the site and realise it’s not a user friendly site ?

Posting a random thread isn’t an effective way to highlight potential issues, it was pure chance I read it. Feedback can be give by email or using the sticky “New Forum” thread.

On iPhone go to settings / Battery. And you can get a list of the apps that use the most battery. If it’s a website then it will show Safari or Chrome at the top of the list.

Not much point posting in the New Forum thread as it doesn't appear to be monitored other than when Drac finds time to have a read through...it certainly was being monitored but that stopped ages ago (based on how infrequent any replies from Tech are and repeated comments are made on it).

Sending an email in tech@ (I believe) should work better.

should work better yes

But how many visiting people will think to hang around , search for an email address etc etc

I imagine potential users will just run for the hills and avoid coming back to the site

I emailed ages ago (as in years) about the site controlling audio output when using something like BBC sounds 🤷‍♂️

It's simply not worth the hassle.

The main man has replied with nothing that we didn't already know. .

Blame as usual put on the user.

But at that point why even have a public forum ?

is that the response tech give to people who outline issues?

’Yes we know it’s shit, pay up and it’s brilliant, or do one - thanks Tech’

If you don’t get the public bit right how do you ever increase footfall ?

If it’s a website then it will show Safari or Chrome at the top of the list.

I did, and it did say it was STW , somehow doing it in the background. Unfortunately after recharging the detail went but the high useage bar remained

All good points...how does it work on local newspaper sites? They are plastered with ads...is there a subscription option there that removes the ads? If so, do people use it or do they just stop visiting.

I don't think this is the same as local newspaper sites as this caters for a very specific user group, but the model seems to be similar.

I've also no skin on the game here, but I pay as I'm a long term user and really can't stand ads, so I'm not going to stop using the site. However, I am curious about all this as plenty people complain but a fair chunk remain and seem to grudgingly accept it is how it is. I find that slightly interesting.

Saying all that though, it would be good to have a far easier way of reporting issues and knowing they are being acknowledged and looked at...I've been lucky as any issues I've had have been answered by other forum users so hasn't been a technical issue but more me not doing something that was then needed due to some change or other.

Use the Report Post function.

Use the sticky thread discussing the site.

Email tech-support@...

The Moderators may flag up technical issues mentioned in posts but there's no guarantee that they'll see it.  It's vanishingly unlikely that the Developers will trip over such comments, the devs don't read the forum (and if I were them I wouldn't be falling over myself to read a load of "you're shit" comments either).

In my experience, you get no response at all!  From what I can tell, people either go paid member, have an ad blocker or grin and bare it. I was paid member for a while but it wouldn't keep me logged in so I lost any advantage!

By the way the ads are a major source of the issue and the volume hijacking and I am sure the car play stuff is because of the intrusive autoplaying video ads.  I wonder if anyone has sat down and added up how many kW a year STW burns on ads the user doesn't even want?  For a site full of tree hugger types it is quite ironic.

They're hosted by a third party so I suspect it's close to "none whatsoever."

Is that an STW response, or a personal response?

I would hope STW did care about the advertising content it kicks out, or the impact it has on users… but then this thread wouldn’t have started if it did…

Use the Report Post function.

Use the sticky thread discussing the site.

Do you really think anyone who stumbles across STW is going to do that?

Anyhow time to leave this one as always it’s clear it’s for users to file failures with the forum correctly or it’s pointless pointing a failure out

You registered in 2008 lol, think it's a bit late to claim you just stumbled across the site as excuse for not reporting it.
