OK, it all seemed to be working fine and dandy, then everything stopped and this message appeared on my new iPhone SE "this accessory is not supported". Such an innocuous phrase is giving me no end of grief and displeasure to my driving experience at the moment! I had a previous iPhone SE with the separate lightening charge socket and accessory jack thingy, which was fine in my 2009 Honda CRV, which doesn't support Bluetooth to the car audio. So with the new phone and single lightening port, I bought a splitter, which separated these two functions and I thought I was good to go. Which initially I was, being able to take hands free calls and listen to Spotify, etc., through the cars audio! But recently this dreaded phrase has appeared, which I wouldn't mind on it's own, but annoyingly it has also decided to cut the audio as well!! I can momentarily listen for short periods by unplugging and plugging in the device, but eventually the iPhone gets wise to this and refuses to play ball. Are there any useful suggestions out there, which don't involve selling the car or not being able to use my company supplied iPhone? Thanks in advance...

Have you checked the phone socket for fluff?

Every time I have seen that message it is the lightning cable that is the problem.

No I haven't checked for fluff. Thanks, I'll give it a go and report back. Just assumed it was a latest firmware update and Apple's attempt to only have their accessories used! Charging appears to be ok though. Anyway, anything to get it performing again..!

Check for fluff but the wires in cheaper adaptors and leads can be pretty fragile and snap/frey inside the insulation. Given neither the phone or the stereo have changed it points to something in between them.

Charging appears to be ok though.

there’s lots of pins on the connector so debris or damage can effect some and not others. It only needs to be a poor connection rather than no connection for the data connection to fail even if it’s sufficient for a battery to charge

Insufficient power through a shit lightning cable is the usual cause of this for me. Cleaning contacts can help.

Best thing I've found to clean out ports is a bristle from a stuff brush.

I cleaned my son’s socket out with a cocktail stick to cure this problem. The fluff can be pretty stubborn. Charging resumed.

Have to say one the main advantages of wireless charging is not randomly seeing that message!

I will try the cleaning thing, but the phone charges ok and works it's just that I get this message followed by the phone not having the ability to broadcast music, etc.

Have you tried connecting it and just listening to the music (i.e. without charging)? That might help isolate the splitter from the charger...

but the phone charges ok

look at the plug - there’s more than one pin so there’s more than one wire inside- charging isn’t the only thing the lead does so whether it charges or not doesn’t rule out other problems with the lead.

This can also happen from a software update IIRC, squashing the operation of knockoff controller chips in the cables.

But good luck with the defluffing.... Gosh that's not a phrase I expected to type

That could lead to an uncomfortable conversation with a Social Worker. 🙂

OP non-Apple unapproved cables can be a problem due to the chips being un-authorised, approved 3rd party cables should be sold as mfi to be legit and guaranteed to work. Amazon tend to sell them without the huge fruity mark-up.

He’s a consenting adult. Useless technophobe, and barely acts like and adult, but he is 23.

I am yet to find a 3rd party adapter of that type that works.

Have you checked the phone socket for Fluff?

I'd wondered where Alan Freeman had vanished to. It explains a lot.

Check the cable and socket - ideally by trying a different cable.

One issue I found when changing cars in the last year, moving to a slightly older car (10 years+), was that when I also switched from Apple Music to Spotify, I got this message (or similar). I found out that if you don't keep a single .mp4 file on the phone, which somehow tells the car stereo that it is connected to a 'music player', it doesn't recognise it.

I ended up transferring over a single .mp4 file from an old CD, that I'd imported to iTunes years back, but it means that my iPhone works fine (with Spotify, BBC Sounds etc). MrsB hasn't done this, and so gets wound up every single time she drives my car, as she can't play any music.
