In some ways I like it stuff William Gibson writes becomes true.

In other ways, not.

That's the prototype for the star wars training drone.

We need lightsabers to combat this!

Surely this is good news as it means we're one step closer to sharks with freakin' lasers?

Could we chip in for stw to get one?

Put a gopro on it for footage of [s]Big Hitters[/s] trolls getting zapped at the mods' decisions.

If I remember correctly (and that's a pretty big assumption) that's plasma arc from the bits of the projectile carrier and railgun internals, not flame. Well, not really. Well, sort of. Anyway, it's basically shorting a lot of electricity across a sandwich, with two magnets as the bread and the sabot as the cheese. Enough power and a little shove and the cheese flies out the end of the bread very, very, very fast.

There's bound to be a wikipedia entry that explains it better.

Actually, I wish more science was explained using lunch material. Now, can anyone explain String Theory using a scotch egg and a Dairylea triangle?

Neal Stephenson had this all nailed in the "Diamond Age", drones, a more advanced form of 3d printing (nano technology based) and tablet computers, in 1995.

As a user who's familiar with anagrams and spoonerisms, I got this straight away and chuckled
