First fell race in over 18 months tonight. Eeek! Totley Moor for those that know the Sheffield area. I'm in the last wave of 6 to start and suspect I'll be in the last 6 to finish too! Hugely oversubscribed and think there'll be a lot of pent up race energy and fast folk chomping at the bit rather than the more normal mixed field that these sort of local, mid-week races tend to attract.
Hey-ho - what's the worst that can happen...
Good luck @dashed. I need to go and do the Jack Bloor race route on Ilkley Moor one evening, they've gone Virtual with it this year. See if I can beat my PB for it, which shouldn't be hard: I think I was stone dead last the last time I ran it...
Good luck tonight @dashed, that's a nice little race, the final climb is a sting in the tail as is the top of the final descent, some nasty tree routes to look out for in the heather IIRC.
@turboferret. I’ve been absent from the thread for a while but just want to state publicly how utterly mad you are.
There, it’s done.
Oh, and what a f*****g incredible achievement that 100 miles was! Stunning.
For those looking for 2 in 1 shorts, I ran in my new TCA ones this morning. Really nice and 2 zipped pockets and phone pouch mean i don't need any more storage when running with the dog.
Code TCA15 gives 15% off.

Well that was a fun race! Lots of staggered groups of 12 to 13 starting 3 mins apart over about 25mins. Most of the groups were very mixed - a lap of the sports field before heading off out into the course proper and generally a few whippets launching off at a proper pace, but then the majority slow and steady.
I was in the last wave and dear god, I was hanging on for dear life just in the first 400m lap leaving the field!! Needless to say, left the field last of the last wave and blowing through my hoop. Rest of the race was steady and caught a few here and there.
Ended up chasing a chap from an earlier wave on the final descent and we were pushing each other on at fair old pace for the last km. Came onto the sports field on very tired legs for a final lap in front of everyone who had already finished. Two groups on the finish line from the respective running clubs we were both running for ended up encouraging us both into a daft sprint finish... Ouch - that hurt!
My thoughts on parkrun are they are right to delay. We often got 800 plus at Nonsuch so I could imagine that being a huge figure if other local events are cancelled. In some places it is running around a field with a few mates, but in the London area it is huge. Imagine the outcry if 1500 runners prevent the general public from enjoying some close proximity.
On another wheezy note, hayfever. Im having difficulty breathing and my nose is steaming so I think it must be the cause. Lungs very tight when running and really uncomfortable. Any recommended remedies bearing in mind the last time I took something I fell asleep on the living room floor. I sleep easily. Thanks.
What number were you @dashed? There's some photo's on the DPFR facebook group
I was 128 - but should have been 126! Dunno what happened at check in but given the wrong number. The very last shot of the 128 posted is me gurning my way through the last few hundred metres!
Just catching up (fat one at the back) and thanks for all the encouragement/assurances. Enjoyed reading (some) of your massive achievement/experience @turboferret, even though curiosity got the better of me 🤮😬🤣
I got to see an NHS physio and the good news is it’s ‘only’ a grade 1 calf sprain He said no running for 3 months and do these exercises.
So although there went summer 20201 C25K plans, am working on an interim walking programme/reconditioning calf muscle/s/cont’d weight loss.
Onwards and upwards/sideways. I’ll be back, with the falling leaves.
Went for a lovely run in the autumnal weather at lunchtime - just a quick 2 mile dash but -24 sec per mile quicker than my average on that run and over two minutes quicker than my first attempt of the year. Quite happy with that.
I went for a run!!!!
It was only 5k on a track, but my calf felt good and I hadn't lost too much pace either. Need to resist the temptation to push to hard to get back properly.
@Lunge - glad you're back on board. Go steady but keep getting out and doing a bit. Even a bit will help your mental state and ready the body for the full return.
I have been suffering with some sort of rib injury/intercostal strain for the last week. It was absolute agony last Thursday and I managed a pedestrian trott of 3 miles in about 40 mins. It has improved since then and I'm able to run relatively normally with only mild irritation. I was worried that my streak was going to be over and was mentally planning to end it, but somehow found the resolve to keep it up, and passed the 2 year mark on Tuesday now on day 733.
Doing 10 miles around Box Hill tomorrow (Sunday) with the club. Should be quite a bit of climbing so not sure how much running that will involve. First proper trail run of the year. Looking forward to it.
Keep at it all.
Right, shoe recommendations please.
I'm after a super cushioned shoe to ease me back from injury. Had a lovely run in my Vaporfly's this morning but they keep pushing me to go fast and I need to take it easy for the moment.
Debating New Balance More V3 or Nike Invincibles.
Anyone tried either, or indeed got any other suggestions.

If you want super-cushioned shoes, then you won't get more cushy than a pair of Hoka Bondis
I was rather start struck to bump into the legnd that is Nicky Spinks coming off the Merrick on sunday, bit of a hero is that one!.
star, not start!
Lucky enough to be in the Lakes over the weekend and squeezed in a very early run up Grasmoor on monday morning before the world woke up. One of those truly stunning mornings!
Carb loading before a Sunday morning marathon - if last big meal is 48 hours before does than mean Friday morning or can I leave it til Friday lunch/dinner/tea?
Appreciate it depends on the individual but just wanted to check the hive mind.
Thanks
Edit - further reading looks like Friday evening is fine. Please ignore ☺️
For a sunday race, any carbs you eat on a friday night are long gone come sunday IME.
Jeez my fitness has dropped, 6 weeks of knee injury has me back what feels like years, heat probably not helping either.
Sunday race, I hit the carbs heavy on Friday and Saturday night, though I make sure the Saturday meal isn't late. I also have a couple of beers, as I find it helps me sleep, but I'm aware this is not good practise.
Reasonably carby breakfast too, porridge or muesli normally.
Can't have too many carbs before a marathon!
Big night run tonight, quite a few of us doing it as a training session prior to the upcoming ultras. 45km along trails we're all fairly familiar with - in daylight. I've done some of them at night, but there's at least one complicated crest we'll have to get over that I've only ever done by day. I'll be taking it very slowly 🙂
Update to my last post - the run was great, really enjoyed it. We all took the complicated bit fairly slowly, and made it over with no issues. As for the rest: we took it fairly easy, a bit harder than ultra pace, and it was ideal. Finished feeling fairly strong and definitely a confidence boost ahead of July's race 🙂
Finally it’s happened. Went to the track tonight with the plan of doing a reasonably quick 5k…cue a 18:35 5k, nearly 2 mins off my PB and my first time under 20 mins. Chuffed.
Oooooof, well done! Haven’t you been injured - effectively tapering? That’s a big PB.
Ran into my local hash group tonight. Quite literally as they seemed to have set a hash that went up and down every good DH track in the woods…
Jesus christ Lunge! you sure you never missed a lap! 🙂
Well done sir! I was very close to being ready for a sub 20 last year, bloddy miles away from it now.
Haven’t you been injured – effectively tapering? That’s a big PB.
Yeah, a 6 week taper in effect, though I've been on the turbo trainer instead of running so it's not been a complete rest. I figured that easing myself back into running by doing 5k's on a soft track was a vaguely sensible thing to do. I was doing just over 21 minutes without really thinking so I thought I'd give it a nudge last night. Was particularly pleased that it was a negative split which suggests there's a touch more in the locker.
Jesus christ Lunge! you sure you never missed a lap!
I did check! I actually ran 3.2 miles as I wanted to make sure I got the distance.
To be fair, the only 5k I've ever run is a lumpy parkrun and the track is always quicker than any other surface.
Good job @lunge, I agree it's definitely easier on a track, but you still need to run it!
Top work @lunge, all that shoe dithering has paid off it seems 🙂
Still, you have to run it.
In a tight race with others to aim at, you'd be quicker again. Adrenalin helps in that situation too.
all that shoe dithering has paid off it seems
Vaporfly's were the answer, strictly speaking they're illegal for track use but they did the job!
I now want to enter a track league and buy some spikes for the first time in 25 years
Nice one lunge 🙂 I have my first track race in a very long time on Monday, a 3000m in the Southern Vets League. Slightly shorter than I've become accustomed to of late! Last race was a 10,000m in June 2019. Will be the first outing for the Nike Dragonfly spikes too. I have a PB of 9:17 to beat from May 2018, lets see if the shoes help...
@turboferret - with all the long distance training I bet you'll surprise yourself and knock out an 8:xx. Those Dragonfly's look like they will be seriously rapid!
@alanf not necessarily convinced, I feel considerably less fresh than I did pre 100 miler, steady runs are feeling quite laboured. It'll also be pretty much solo I would expect, as the general standard of the Vets competition isn't hugely high, but I might be surprised....
I'm hoping to get a short run in at the track today, been struggling with hip issues for months, so have rested and seen a physio, it's better but not totally right. However in sick of taking my son to the track to train and then sitting about and doing nothing, and now the weather is better it needs a test. Nothing much just a Jew 1km reps at easy pace, whilst the skinny teenagers fly past me ☹️
Inspired by Lunge as I've not been under 20 mins since getting my hip replaced 3 years ago, got close hopefully be able to start regular training again soon
Intervals at the track later, but my new tri club runs on a 200m track. They're bad enough on a 400m track, but after a few on the new track I feel like a bloody hamster.
Encouraged by all those who are getting back to it, started trying to get back to autumn's fitness a couple of weeks ago - all in the hills as i really don't get on with roads. Did the 6 Munros east of the road at Glenshee on Sunday in a vaguely tolerable time and was just waiting for the pain and stiffness to follow. But...nothing. Feel absolutely fine, so now thinking of those longer days to work towards. Just need Scottish summer to last longer than 2 days.
@turboferret - maybe the competition wont give you the extra kick you need then, but I often go into races with no expectations and surprise myself, in fact I think my mindset is usually, 'We'll just see what happens'. I think what you should maybe do is pretend you're at the back when you start and are a lap down, and try and get back to the front by lapping everyone at least once! Good luck.
New super-shoe drop today, the NB FuelCell RC Elite v2, getting rave reviews from those in the know. It's a good job NB don't really bit my feet or that'd be another £200 spent on shoes...!

@lunge they sold out quickly, so one assumes they're better than the 1st version. I was so underwhelmed by those that I sent them back for a refund
Anyone going to Ennerdale tomorrow? Looks like cool but clear conditions on the tops. I'll be racing, hoping for a 4:30 time to finish.
