gb v japan just started.
Our girls going for silver or bronze in the team gymnastics.....such a tough comp, but hopefully can do better than our guys last night.
i'm in danger of liking rugby here! 😆 good game that 21-19 gb.
GB did their best to try and snatch a draw from the jaws of victory. A win is a win, though.
Japan looking very good at this tournament. Great play.
7s is a lot of fun to watch. Like T20 cricket, it's a blast. It's not as good as the real thing, but still great! 🙂
Gymnastics is great, must absolutely savage their bodies. The amount of plasters the Japanese lass had on her hands. The American on the beam was like a robot!

From my limited second hand experience of watching my daughter do gymnastics there's nothing at all easy about it, and we seem to visit the local hospital to get sprains treated on a regular basis...
The top gymnasts are also training something like 30 hours a week, nothing too extraordinary for an elite athlete but still a fair amount of time to spend doing sport. (And even more so when you consider a lot of them are teenagers, and still developing).
[quote=seosamh77 ]Is there somewhere more uptodate you can watch catch up stuff quicker?
Got the bbc rio site, which is great for watching and casting live stuff, but iplayer only seems to have yesterdays stuff on catch up?
Not sure whether they've fixed it, or I've found a way to do this, but I'm currently watching the BBC2 coverage from a couple of hours ago. Rather than try to find coverage of a specific event, in iplayer go to channels, select the channel of the coverage you're after (may be a bit of trial and error) and go to the schedule - programmes broadcast on normal TV seem to go up on there almost immediately. No use for stuff which wasn't broadcast, but should be of some help.
Red button channels are 472 to 477 on Sky if that helps.
You can check the schedule and record whatever you like.
I quite like the swimming, but the finals are a daft o clock so I just record them
GB v NZ sevens now on BBC 4
Wow - we win against NZ & top the pool!! By my calculations our prize will be a QF against - either NZ or Aus, the 2 top rated teams in the tournament 😯
Real lack of tournament information on commentary. By my calculations, USA losing by less than 4 poiints would have put NZ out. Their missed conversion allows NZ through by 1 pt as 2nd bespattered 3rd place team. GB to play Aus in QF. I think.
Edit : GB v Arg, whereas top qualifiers Fiji have earned a match with NZ!!
Regarding the TV coverage, why do the BBC feel the need to keep switching the main coverage between BBC1 and BBC2 - checking the schedules, it's on one or the other continuously, but switches between the two several times a day? Are there some programmes which have to be on BBC1 and some on BBC2? Can't they just have it all continuously on BBC2 and promote the BBC2 programmes to BBC1 for a couple of weeks? I just don't get the point.
I've missed the end of one event so far because I was recording one channel and it switched to the other (yes I can get it on iplayer, but recordings work a bit better, and I had to wait a while before it came on iplayer).
The US basketball teams are apparently staying on a huge boat, obviously putting some of those millions of $ to use.
Don't they have proper changing rooms at the diving pool? Changing behind towels in a corridor!
They forgot the roof too. Fantastic competition though.
They also forgot to feed the meter for the lights until part way through the last round.
Who cares now - 2 more golds!! Boom!!
How many medals has Leeds won now?
What was that hoo-ha about the lights? Did they wait too long or did they go early or did it just spoil their concentration?
Blinking heck that 7s was tight
Diving: Fabulous win. I can understand why Tom Daley gets all the attention making the Beijing games at 15 years old but his two Bronzes are topped by a Gold !
Excellent game. The sevens is a great addition to the Olympics. Perhaps football should be 5 a side, rather than the full game.
^Now that's a great idea!^
7s probly better. Is the R7s played on a full size pitch?
Highlights for me today were Fabian Cancellara's gold in the TT, and Max Whitlock's bronze in the gymnastics.
And yes, gymnastics is savage on the body, based on my experience of doing it 4 times a week from the age of 8 to 16.
What a great win in the canoeing... Way to go Joe!
Watching the 7s is almost making me enjoy rugby...
The Russians shouldn't be there. It's one big horridly organised political shit-fest.
Worst atmosphere at an Olympics ever. The road race safety, green pool, crowds(?) are a shambolic joke.
Celebrating a bronze like a gold is exactly the reason you'll never win gold.
Hey ho, at least we have Bolt to look forward to. The man who has run massively faster than the four other fastest [s]proven drug taking [/s]sprinters in history.
Who to put his astonishing world record achievements into perspective, is akin to slaughtering an EPO riddled Armstrong up Ventoux, on a Raleigh Grifter.
Pfffftt.
well the weightlifting was great, drama with a nasty injury, Chinese favourite playing it safe and then a Kazak lifter adding 4 kg onto the world record and lifting it
mind you it's also probably one of the worst sports for doping so the results might not last the week
I wonder if anybody's doing an [s]alternative[/s] correct medals table where any medals won by Russians are re-allocated to the next athlete.
I did have a bit of sympathy for some of them who are presumably clean, but seeing Zabelinskaya winning a medal today makes me think that's why none of them should be there, because she quite clearly shouldn't be, and that would apparently have been the only way to keep those like her at home.
Can you celebrate a bronze like a gold if you were "beaten" by two Russians?
Lots I'm still looking forward to with people who I don't think are on PEDs competing.
Japan into the rugby semi-finals, NZ and OZ sent home crying. Best thing to happen to rugby since SA and England getting humiliated at the WC last year. We should scrap 15 a side and just stick to sevens.
2 golds for Staffordshire will be the headline in our local paper.

I understand jaded cynicism, but I don't get it particularly re Bolt. Just because someone's faster than a drug cheat doesn't automatically mean they have to be cheating too.
Re Bolt - he's not even that good. He's never run a decent 100m in his life, compared to his capability - all his times are flawed by a poor mstart, middle or finish - he's not put his best 3 together yet and if he could would run another 0.1-0.2 faster. He's just been blessed with an incredible body for the event that shouldn't work but does.
There was a brilliant BBC programme on it, which i can't find now but there's a bit on it tomorrow.

Although there is also the complete lack of any drug testing regime in Jamaica for many years allowing their athletes to dope unhindered out of season until a couple of years ago. The Jamaicans and the Kenyans should be viewed with exactly the same suspicions as the Russian athletes that have been allowed to compete.
Celebrating a bronze like a gold is exactly the reason you'll never win gold.
You are Piers Morgan, and I claim my £5
NZ not performing to their usual standard in the 7s could be because they can't take their dodgy juice that gives them the edge in those last minute situations where they always outperform the opposition and win.
As it's the Olympics there is the danger of getting tested for dodgy juice so they have to go without .
Just a thought.
I thought Conway was unlucky and deserved to go through to final
The Kazak weightlifting celebrations were top drawer.

FTFY
my guess and the way I view it is they are all doping just haven't been caught yet
Why does swimming have such a high profile? For every race, the swimmers are announced individually and we have to watch them swagger out to the pool and take their tracksuit off one by one.

That's the normal medal table isn't it? You seem to have broken it.
my guess and the way I view it is they are all doping just haven't been caught yet
Well I'm glad I don't share your world view - I'm fairly confident (and my view is shared by those with far more knowledge of this than either of us) that most of them are clean.
One look at the table of banned athletes or athletes whom have tested positive and the total number damns each and every other athlete by virtue of the sheer volume of the guilty.
Re Bolt - he has utterly destroyed the competition by apparently not even running a perfect race. We aren't talking about someone who is just a bit better than a few others, we are talking about a relative chasm of time faster - hugely faster than those with 'better sprinting physiques and techniques', all riddled with massive performance enhancing drugs.
The 4 closest men to him in the history of his event (miles behind Bolt, miles ahead of the rest) are all proven cheats.
To suggest/hope that this speed is purely down to his chicken nugget diet, long legs, and cheeky personality is pretty much absurd.
Unfortunately, Bolt defenders now sound like Armstrong defenders did, before the biggest doping scandal in history unraveled.
Despite this, bizarrely, I still hope that Bolt is clean.
This isn't the Olympic doping thread, we can all do that if we want! This is a thread to discuss sport and our sportsmen and women trying their utmost, following years of training. Dismissing performances of people you know nothing about is just spoiling it and depressing me!
Go and start your own 'glass half empty' thread!
