The rowing (and presumably canoeing/kayaking) course looks brutal - though anybody who's competed at Nottingham should be used to that, which might benefit the Brits!

Ladies rugby 7s was a bit disappointing in terms of skill - at least until the last few minutes.

Not a great fan of the crest on team GB kit either.

Not too much on I'm interested in yet, but it is just the first day, and I also watched that swimming world record by the chap who didn't seem to even think it was anything much special!

Seeing the times of a lot of finals and given I'm not usually good at going to bed until the small hours it strikes me that's going to get a whole lot worse for me!

What's with these (C)BBC presenters? Every one of them makes me want to kill them with fire.

Patronising irritating childish buffoons. We used to have good presenters who could actually, present.

It seemed to be a pretty collective crime. So I'm going to have to disagree in this case.

I'm rooting for Nile Wilson in the men's gymnastics cos I'm his postman and he's a nice lad. He's been slowly getting better for the last few years and recently got a European gold.

I thought this was supposed to be about non-cycling events, given there's a big Olympic cycling one?

GB women's rugby team seem on point.

Women's synchro diving - near but far. Some of the cossies needed a wee bit more fabric to be decent.

Fencing - WTF with 'right of way' stuff - surely first hit should count?

Anyone staying up to see if Peaty wins our first gold.

Watching the men's beach volleyball currently, Brazil v Cuba which is a close game, however the commentator sounds like he's watching paint dry!

The commentator made a remark that one of the British pair was going for surgery straight after the games (on an injured wrist)

I've been enjoying that as well. That's some good Olympic watching.

collective punishment is wrong..

Not when the crime is state-sponsored and systematic. It's about time someone had the balls to do it. The IOC should be ashamed.

the rugby 7s is quite a good game actually. I never watch rugby, don't even know the rules, not such thing as rugby in any of my schools. But That's a few times I've watched sevens, I've got a rough general idea of the rules just from watching it. Quite enjoy it.

So regarding rules what are the must know rules? The 7s seem quite straight-forward, no scrums or anything like that? (what's the point of them anyhow? ) and how do you foul in rugby beyond passing forward? Take it you're not allowed to hook someone in the jaw? 😆 and it's basically that kinda shoulder charge that is the accepted form of tackling?

also just the 2 ways to score, touchdown and a try? 5 and 2 points?

and cards, yellow means sin bin for 2?

what are the must know rules?

There are soooo many rules! (Speaking as a referee!) I learn new ones every match!
Basically, got to be one your feet to handle the ball. (get tackled, release, get up), pass backwards, stay onside (I could elaborate, but I won't), tackle anywhere shoulders and below, using both arms.

And, as the GB side have just demonstrated and blown their chances of a gold or silver, don't tackle a player when they're off the ground, or when they haven't got the bloody ball!

Yes, they can't jump a tackler, but when they jump to catch the ball you've either got to go for the ball, or wait til they have a foot on the ground. Cause of many penalties that.

handball! wtf is that all about? who watches and/or particpates in these sports? I do enjoy the olympics but some of it is just glorfied niche international sportsday. Badminton that's another silly one, table tennis!
I enjoy the events which feature more than one sport, decathlon & triathlon... brilliant!

Couldn't disagree more jekkyl! The inclusion of professional sports, which already have hundreds of high profile tournaments, has really detracted from the Olympics in my view. Football? Tennis? bloody millionaires pretending a gold medal is important to them? Dunloikit.

basic passing / handling error led to a situation where she then 'had' to grab a shirt to prevent a score. Which then led to a score anyway.

Then a girl down led to an overlap, and a bad bounce led to the 'in the air tackle' - unfortunate but she did wrap her arms round instead of just getting run over. And then 2 girls down and a rout was inevitable, with panic setting in and error after error.

One poor pass.....

Anything that is judged rather than won, not a proper sport.

Anything where you can earn more than a million, not a proper Olympic sport.

Edit - anything where you need a million to take part, not a proper sport. So that's the horsey stuff gone.

Honestly wouldn't miss it. The World Champs and TdF, Classics etc all more important than olympics imo.

Footie, tennis, golf - Definitely not. What's the point? Like road cycling they've already got major trophies with lots of history.

What do folk think is the hardest Olympic sport for a novice to do?
Contrary to a post above I think that the horsey 3 day eventing thing is one of the toughest but my only equine experience is on a Blackpool donkey.I couldn't do anything at all in the gymnastics and not much more than a belly flop in the diving. Might struggle in the boat and slalom canoe too.

The bay is full of raw sewage, the road race course left the lead women's rider in intensive care with concussion, the stadia are empty, not a good advert really. Like the IOC give a sh1t. And no, golf, tennis, football, road cycling, walking have no place at the games.

Some good stuff so far tho. The gymnasts are impressive especially the rings, that looks blddy hard.
What do folk think is the hardest Olympic sport for a novice to do?

Define "do" and "novice". Lots of them are pretty much impossible for a complete novice.

Just to talk about those I have a clue about, if by "do" you mean getting through all the gates, then you need to be semi-expert to do the canoe slalom - I could probably manage that, but then I was at one point in the top 50 in this country, anybody much below that level wouldn't. If you've never paddled a racing boat before you wouldn't even make to the start line in a sprint kayak (and I imagine the same goes for the rowing) - though I could quite competently take part in that despite being nowhere as good as I was at slalom. I guess for the sprint kayaking, you're probably talking about weeks to months of training to complete the course in the boats they use, for the slalom, years.

Windsurfing - well it's going to take you a while to get to a point you can stand up holding the sail, but you'll still be falling in at every turn.

Horses - I've galloped on horses, I don't think I'd even make it over the first jump.

Stuff I don't know about:
BMX - they have gaps don't they? Not sure I could complete their course despite almost being capable on a bike.

Pole vault!!!

Gymnastics - got to be quite tricky to do anything with some of those bits of kit they use

Anything where you can earn more than a million, not a proper Olympic sport.

I love basketball, and I'm enjoying watching the USA play some outrageous moves as they comprehensively muller Venuzuela, but I'm inclined to think that the millionaires of the NBA shouldn't really be there. Even an U21 / College age group team would be a match for most countries.

I'm interested to know too - do the millionaire olympians muck in like the amateurs? Are Andy and Jamie Murray sharing a room in the village. Will Justin Rose be queuing for food alongside the Judo squad. Are the NBA millionaires claiming a need for proper hotels because they're too big for the beds? Will they be aiming to tap off with the Beach Volleyballers at the closing ceremony?
I'm interested to know too - do the millionaire olympians muck in like the amateurs?

Some of them do, certainly - I'm not sure about all of them. The Murrays come across as really enjoying being part of a team - I'd be very surprised if they weren't in the village. Having said that, ISTR some of them staying out of the village before their events at previous games because it didn't suit their preparations - I'm thinking of complete sports teams here rather than those with lots of money.

Who knows with the golfists who don't seem terribly excited by the whole thing?

I do hope so - when I played sport (last century) I used to just love being around a team, and the giggles of being at an Olympics with all those teams full of the world's best must be great. Maybe that should be the deciding factor - if you're too 'big' to share digs with three other athletes in a student hall of residence, then the Olympics are not for you.

I also hope that someone somewhere is organising a tennis vs badminton ping pong tournament.
