Did anyone else see the Ockenden Report press conference this afternoon looking into (pretty catastrophic) failure in Nottingham University NHS Trust's maternity services? The damage done was staggering and it seems a massively important story.
I'm not usually affected by the news too much but found myself tearing up on occasion. I also felt obligated to stand for the minutes silence as requested.
As a country we seem to have had endless scandals and inquests and failed or substandard redress and implementation of recommendations (the Ockenden Report is just one of several recent reports on NHS maternity units) and I'm not sure that we're becoming a little numb to them. This one though was truly shocking & the number effected huge.
I was also hugely impressed with the lady herself, her delivery, sincerity and compassions as well as her recommendations, and I really hope that she's listened to (this rather highlighted for me the the huge gulf between the self-serving muppets in politics and those that take a less self-serving path through life).
I suspect that there was no remit to apportion blame, but the report did rather put a small group of unnamed powerful individuals in the spotlight (Trust bigwigs & obstetrician). I suspect that they'll walk away scot free with fat pensions.
