Any film that manages to be disturbing [i]and[/i] rather boring probably merits an award of some kind.
Crisply-shot portrayal of post-war American bullsh1Te cults and the damaged individuals they prey upon, with a near-deranged (in a very good way, admittedly) performance by Joaquin Phoenix... but still, somehow, not [i]quite[/i] as good as it thinks it is.
That said, it should annoy the hell out of Scientologists - and for that reason alone, it deserves to win several Oscars. 😈
