Big spaceship wot got lightspeed-kamikazeed at the end; something else.
Snoke's ship / First Order headquarters.

Aye, so light speed takedown wasn't Dreadnought. Watching the twinkles after it sliced, did it take out the star cruiser sized things as well? If so, how did the baddies get down to the planet with all that kit?
If so, how did the baddies get down to the planet with all that kit?
Through the magic of cinema
Nike, it was the humour I didn't like, it seemed streetwise, like the whole can hold please and Yoda saying page turner. Was very pop culture humour, similar to something I'd expect in gotg, but not from something set in a far away galaxy a long time ago
Overall I liked it , went in directions I didn’t expect which the force awakens certainly didn’t . Killing snoke is fine but I would of liked to of found out a bit more about him and his motives .
I really liked the Finn and engineer girl characters but the casino world was the one bit that didn’t really work for me , not sure why maybe didn’t feel Star Wars enough.
I assumed they would kill off Leia so interested to see how they deal with that .
Utter drivel.....!!makes you wonder why Lucas sold too Disney, was it he actually knew it had know where too go??
I found it an absolute cgi spectacle but was left thinking what the hell am I still sitting here for(7 yr old sitting next too me so would of been a scene from the movie had I decided too leave),but fell asleep instead,I expected it too be predictable but it was anything but,the story had no flow or cohesion, dodgy acting rubbish script and a complete assassination of the original characters, cheapest of the cheap one liners and what ever the message they were trying too get across become more and more blurred as the film went on,I've been a fan of SW since being taken too Leicester square in 1977 but last night was a massive disappointment apart from the cgi,for me the plot and story seemed like it had been written by a haribo fuelled eight yr old...
There was one epic scene that was original SW and that was where snoke, Rey and the the one with the strange voice and cloak had a dust up,class but could have been left as a cliff hanger,we hadn't even got too know anything about Smoke, next minute he's gone.
Shame really.
I enjoyed it but it felt very disjointed, and wtf were those star destroyers doing just sitting there at the beginning.... Justin Theroux was criminally underused in favour of BDT.
I thought it was a good kids movie, much like Episode I. Not much in it for me.
Not saying it was as bad as the unmentionable one really, but the cheap humour was really off putting, and the audience in our cinema laughed way too hard at some of the bits. Weird. The bit where the daft little creature did Chewy’s roar really pissed me off.
The whole thing was a bit of a cheese-fest. Shame.
Can’t come close to touching Rogue One or Empire
Comparing it to The Phantom Menace? Seriously? 😆
When I saw Episode 1, I came out massively disappointed. All I kept thinking was that it had taken sixteen years to come up with this crap? Proof, not that it was needed, that any film with Euan McGregor (other than Shallow Grave and Trainspotting) would be better if they left him on the cutting room floor.
But I digress. I saw it at the Imax in Glasgow and loved it. Poignant, funny, exciting, proper plot twists - it was better than I had dared to hope. Not knowing the background and motivation of characters isn't a problem for me. The whole Darth Vader was just a petulant wee fanny thing came close to ruining my opinion of Star Wars to Jedi but I happily ignore those prequel films now. Any Star Wars film will struggle to beat Empire but it set the bar so high, all the films that have followed are judged against it.
I particularly enjoyed the use of previous themes in the soundtrack which I thought struck the right note, no pun intended. 😀
I remember watching Empire with my Dad at the Odeon in Glasgow having queued round the block. At the end of the screening, I came away desperate to see the next film. The Last Jedi has left he and I with the same feeling over thirty years later.
Job done. Very happy boy. I can't wait to see it again.
Sanny
No, not comparing it to it as such, as I thought my second line said... It’s clearly nowhere near as bad a movie as TPM, but it didn’t have the right feel (like TPM) and nowhere near as good as TFA or Rogue One.
If they’d just left the cheap humour on the cutting floor, left out that weird Leia scene and made it a bit dirtier I’d have enjoyed it so much more.
As it was, it felt cheesy and disjointed, and I left disappointed.
I agree that, in a lot of ways, it didn't feel like a Star Wars film. I think that, along with the plot twists made it really engaging for me. I'm not sure how that will stand up to repeated viewings but will find out soon enough.
The casino I didn't mind as I had a feeling it was going somewhere, and judging by the ending, it's a sign of things to come rather than important in itself.
Some of the visuals were really good, I loved the salt lake and the ships looked ace. There were a couple of moments of silence which were great as well.
While I've got some ideas, the biggest question for me is: what does The Force Awakens actually mean?
I really enjoyed it, flaws and all. If you see it as a step towards a 'reinvention' of the franchise then the stuff that some people found out of place - like the tone of the humour - makes more sense. TFA was the safe bet to get the new trilogy off the ground and TLJ is the film to 'kill the past etc.' so it can move on.
Best bits -
the fight in Snoke's chamber, loved that.
The confrontation of Luke and Kylo Ren
opening space battle
worst
Maz Kanatas bit - why?
The code breaker guy and his double cross thing
Capt Phasma - only slightly redeemed
Will go and see it again in a couple of weeks.
Just seen it - it's weak, but it doesn't leave me as cold as TFA.
Hoping Solo will be as good as Rogue One...
I have mixed feelings about it. There were really good bits but I reckon it should have been much more aggressively edited. Not just chopping out Space Vegas but getting through a lot of the rest of it more quickly. By giving not just Rey, Poe and Finn plots, but also Ren, Leia and Luke too it all got stretched out.
The ending had many spectacles but as I'd already gone through the lightsaber duels and the cruiser hyperspace attack I was maybe getting a bit punch drunk. Plus the "cut to no sound" thing that happened for a couple of the big ship explosions felt really not Star Wars to me.
I liked the Rey/Ren interactions and their big confrontation, it did feel to me like that could go in a number of directions. The Rey/Luke stuff was generally good too but I would have been happier if it had taken about as long as the Dagobah bits took in Empire. Rose was a good addition, except for the fact that a lot of her bits were part of the Space Vegas sequence. Benico Del Toro's part would have been more appropriate as a recurring character in a TV series than in a movie.
One of the issues of Lucasfiln being in the Disney studio is how they (Disney) kill off characters. Watch the video above, Disney villans fall to their deaths, it's a way of killing off the baddie without having your child's hero becoming a murderer, apply this rule to the battle and death of Capt. Phasma.
I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing, it just signals the hand of a studio. Look out soon for the "princess-ing" of Ray
"Salty."
I really enjoyed it but by the time it finished i felt like there was a lot of unanswered questions.
Is Luke really dead?
Who was Snoke?
Are Reys parents really nobodies? I think she might turn out to be a palpatine?
What is going to happen with Leia in the next film?
Is Ren really the bad guy?
Could Ren and Rey swap, Rey definitely has something dark about her in this film.
Watch the video above, Disney villans fall to their deaths, it's a way of killing off the baddie without having your child's hero becoming a murderer, apply this rule to the battle and death of Capt. Phasma.
To be fair they also had no problems about slicing Snoke in half and decapitating his minions.
Regarding the princessing theory, if you follow the trajectory of recent Disney female leads they are continually moving away from the helpless girl stereotype - see Moana - for example. They have enough 'classic' princesses in their back catalogue so they don't need any more, things have moved on.
Remember also that the exec producer is Kathleen Kennedy...
Watched it, loved it.
Was a little bereft at the end, massive over reaction I know but Luke Skywalker was part of my childhood.

He isn't dead 🙂
Second time seeing it now, and its good but could have been better with some judicious application of the cutting room floor. The humour, some of it anyway, is too contemporary. Whole of the Space Vegas bit...I'm just not sure. I think what they're trying to say is that whether or not the light or the dark is in the ascendant, someone is making money and hence the cycle continues progressed by commerce, and that this too has to stop. BDT's character epitomises this by selling them out, venally.
But I dunno.
I did like the red/white symbolism, particularly near the end. I'm guessing that "red breaking through white" is to symbolise the rise of the resistance; the old-school rebellion colours were red and white. Also noticed this time that in the Ren/Luke fight, Luke's feet left no traces- nice touch.
The milk drinking/big rubber fish fishing scene must have been to show that Luke was living a primitive existence, but could have been done in a better way IMO.
I also cringed a bit when that Scottish actress did her accent-mashup on the bridge of the First Order's ship; like me, she's Glaswegian (nearly) and I could hear that coming through. I suppose the idea of Space Weegies has a wee bit to go yet 🙂
Still enjoyed it; second half is better than first.
The disappointing thing about the Star Wars films like the Alien franchise is there are actually more poor films than great ones.
You cling to the hope that the next one will ignite your imagination like the original two films.
Never though ROTJ was very good either and that tips the balance.

Like a lot of 150min films.
They should've focused up all of the stuff with Luke and Rey in. That really dragged the film down when it should have been gathering momentum.
A classic like Goodfellas which runs at a similar duration certainly packs more pace, plot and character in its editing. But then we're comparing apples and oranges.
Salty
That was particularly bad exposition. Reminded me of Lethal Weapon when Mel Gibson tasted the petrol and said , "Exxon".

I just fast-forward through most of the Endor scenes to make it enjoyable :).

For sure! Even though the storyline is mostly fantasy it's got some of the best cinematography ever to come out of Hollywood and a superbly matched soundtrack. Not that Star Wars music isn't tippy-top...
Well I thought itcwas a cracking movie
My main though is that Mark Hamill is a great actor,
Adam Driver has matured from emo to conflicted adult.
They’ve made Poe Dameron into a dick.
Only think that really grates with me was super girl in space Leia.
Will watch it again

He really is.
Also, the casino scene was perfectly timed. It allowed me to go for a piss and not miss anything important
Not read the whole thread but did anyone else notice Rey had nicked the Jedi text books? They were in that drawer she opens in th ‘Falcon near the end.
just seen it, thought it was amazing. I'd love to see it again with a remote control so I could rewind the bits I missed - so much going on.
I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the number of strong female roles in the resistance. that really stood out for me. Fisher, the replacement Admiral, Rey, Rose, fighter pilots, bomber pilots. not just token roles.
only odd part for me was Luke milking that beached Manatee thing on Achtoo.
on Achtoo.
So named because it’s so cold and wet it makes you sneeze?

This.
There should be some kind of sign that come up on the screen that means you can safely leave your seat for 5 minutes and you will not miss anything plot wise. I'm middle aged, films that go past 90 minutes take some logistical planning on the beverage side.
I was entertained.
Only bit that really grated was when Leia did that cringey force-fly-back-to-the-ship thing - in particular when the single doors were opened to let her back in and NO ONE GOT SUCKED OUT!
A couple of articles I found interesting.

Summary:
People don't like it because it doesn't feel like Star Wars.
Other people like it because it doesn't feel like Star Wars.
only odd part for me was Luke milking that beached Manatee thing on Achtoo.
Blue milk.
Yeah PP spotted the books too.
It was green milk.
Also, Gwendoline Christie’s left eye managed to get some screen time I see.
I'm going to see it again tonight (3rd time) and I'm actually looking forward to it. Maybe as Mashable says, we need to let go of the past. Its a bit of entertainment after all.
It was green milk.
Correct.
Maybe as Mashable says, we need to let go of the past. Its a bit of entertainment after all.
It had plenty of Star Wars in it and needs to move on a bit, Han is gone, Luke vanished and Liah hasn’t got much time left.
we need to let go of the past
this is the overriding theme of the film!
I was hoping for "that would be an ecumenical matter" from Luke during the Craggy Island scenes.
I watched it with a load of teenage boys. Lots of stifled laughter at Snoke's 'spunk' line....
Did anyone else think there was some dis-continuity in Reys sceans? It might be the seats we were in but some sceans she looked skinyer than others.
I enjoyed it, i think some are remembering the films through childhood eyes and imagination whilst watching new films with adult cynicism.
Went to watch it with dwan jr(9) and he sat jaw dropped, even closing his eyes and holding out his hand when Luke was training Rey to feel the force.
I also cringed a bit when that Scottish actress did her accent-mashup on the bridge of the First Order's ship; like me, she's Glaswegian (nearly) and I could hear that coming through. I suppose the idea of Space Weegies has a wee bit to go yet
She is abysmal. Her lines in Prometheus were horrific

Which is pretty much what the films are about but they’re cult following means they try to please an older audience too.
Not read the whole thread but did anyone else notice Rey had nicked the Jedi text books? They were in that drawer she opens in th ‘Falcon near the end.
I was wondering about those!!! Watched for the second time today and noticed them.
It was also a pleasure to watch Ade Edmondson now I know he's in it 🙂
It really is a great film, probably my favourite since The Empire Strikes back (appropriately enough!! 🙂 )
So here's another question: Whatever happened to The Knights of Ren? I'm guessing that's what Luke was referring to when he said 'he fled with a handful of my students' after Kylo destroyed the Jedi Temple, but they don't feature again....
Did Kylo not kill them all?
The Knights of Who? Oh... those guys. So, about all that stuff we introduced in TFA, we're, uh, just going to forget all that stuff happened... ok?
So were they not them red fellas?
Re. Rey's parents, she had a flashback in TFA of her being left on Jakku as a ship blasted away, so clearly there's more to her background than them being alchys that sold her off
Anyone think we'll ever get a resolution on how Luke's lightsaber got collected from Bespin and ended up with Maz Kanata?
I think they basically decided that JJ Abrams had shoved far to much nonsense into TFA so just chose to ignore it. Otherwise you’d just have a movie that centred on exposition,
Up to JJ if he wants to revisit it all in the next one though
This is the thing that really grates though. It's like they have rebooted the reboot 2 films into a trilogy. I might consider petitioning to re-edit TFA and TLJ into one better start to a new trilogy, there is surely a coherent story that could be told while still introducing the new characters and giving a satisfactory end to the old ones.

Good luck with that.
Good luck with that.
While I don't doubt there won't be any more coherent versions you can sure as hell bet Disney are revving up for plenty of milked out special editions at some point.
coherent story
disney's understanding of story arc doesn't go beyond Noah.
Edit- That's not true, SW Rebels and Rogue One both work out and fit with the overall story. TLJ doesn't fit. At least they had some cool, new, spaceships.
I’ll bite.
What overall story doesn’t it fit?
Hmm. Much, much more enjoyable on the 3rd viewing. I think that this time the humour didn't grate. The only parts that jarred were the wildlife, and Luke's big space cow drinking scene.
It really is full of excellent set pieces. I even think I heard someone refer to a "27 b slash 6" in the casino scene, when they were being arrested.
I'm raising my score to 7/10. And Mark Hamill is really phenomenal.
Hmm. Much, much more enjoyable on the 3rd viewing.
You didn't like it, so you went agen. Still didn't like it, so you went for a 3rd go??
Sounds like it was worth it for you, but I won't be attempting this strategy.

Not quite- 1st viewing was a surprise present from a pal, 2nd was our regular arranged work Christmas night out (my boss is a huge geek and SW is almost mandatory), and 3rd was with a group of old pals; the latter 2 were arranged weeks ago.
Took my 5&6 year olds and they loved it I thought it was decent.
I haven't seen all the other films though so I'm no starwars geek...
Seen TFA and the original trilogy but saw phantom menace and didn't bother with the other 2 after that
There were quire a few bits that annoyed me. Now don't get me wrong I appreciate it's a flight of fantasy but as a bit of a Star Wars tech geek they seem to have lost the plot. I'd give it a 6.5/10.
1. Poe Cameron talking to the Star Destroyers - Really! I'm pretty sure they'd just blow him out of the sky and ask questions later.
2. Those bombers. They're slower than an old Y-Wing / B-Wing and they have to be over the target to drop their bombs. Also they have no electronic targetting they basically look out of the bomb bay doors. Jesus Chris a Lancaster had higher tech than that.
3. Fighter Screen, what fighter screen? Did the Imperials not go to military academy? No lessons learnt from all the Death Star and SSD destruction. Basically throw up a decent fighter screen.
4. Hyperspace tracking. Did no one think to look for the transmitter that had to be placed on the Republic/rebel ship. Oh no stuff that we'll go on a one way trip to the imperial flag ship, WTF! Also if they knew they were only tracking the flagship why not all jump aboard the smaller ships and scatter?
2. Those bombers. They're slower than an old Y-Wing / B-Wing and they have to be over the target to drop their bombs. Also they have no electronic targetting they basically look out of the bomb bay doors. Jesus Chris a Lancaster had higher tech than that.
... and gravity.
Despite all that, thought it was a bit rubbish. Rehash of the same old story. And the rebellion seemed surprisingly chipper at the end given they'd just had a good kicking and lost most of their people and ships.
I even think I heard someone refer to a "27 b slash 6" in the casino scene, when they were being arrested.
What is 27 b slash 6?
And the rebellion seemed surprisingly chipper at the end given they'd just had a good kicking and lost most of their people and ships.
But they are the spark that will light the fire that will burn down the Empire lol
Again, I'm willing to overlook a certain level of plot hole in the name of sci-fi/fantasy, but some of them were a bit too silly to ignore. My main gripes are...
1/ Why didn't the First Order light-speed away and then back again a bit closer to the Resistance ships so they were within firing range.
2/ The whole casino world plot seemed a missed opportunity, none of what happened had any real bearing on the rest of the film. You could lift that whole section out and it would make no difference.
2b/ Some of that felt very like Phantom Menace, especially when they were escaping riding on the backs of what-ever-they-weres.
2c/ Not a gripe, but I totally expected Lando to be somewhere on that planet...
3/ TFA raised various threads and questions which all seem to now be irrelevant.
Whoever said (above) that it feels like it's being rebooted again hit the nail on the head.
Points 1 and 2 make 80-90% of the film irrelevant. They're my main gripes, the following are just general grumbles that I'd typically ignore/overlook;
4/ Caretakers, Porgs or "milkers", not all 3...
5/ Leia suddenly being inexplicably able to significantly use the force
6/ Some of the CGI of younger Luke appeared to be a pile of body parts glued together, like a puppet who's had 1 in 3 of his strings cut... The first time they showed him he looked to be animated by the people who brought us King Rollo...
7/ Since when were Finn and Rose pilots (Finn needed Poe to pilot the TIE in TFA)? Was I the only one hoping Finn was going to actually sacrifice himself and fly into the laser?
I'm clearly missing something, as most reviews seem to laud it...
My Rating: A generous 6/10
5/ Leia suddenly being inexplicably able to significantly use the force
Her natural talent with the force due to her Skywalker ancestry is referenced a few times in this film and the others
I agree with 6/, 'skinny Luke' did look quite weird!
I thought this was just a lame attempt to jump on the bandwagon of films such as GOTG/Deadpool/Star Trek reboot which are popularising this style of humour. Doesn't work IMO in a Star Wars film which is supposed to be po-faced.You mean the 'you're on hold, is that Admiral Hux?'stuff?!?! I thought that was absolutely amazing!!! So irreverent, definitely stuck a much needed finger in the eye of po-faced science fiction.
Enjoyed it though, it was (way) better than TFA, but not a classic nor better than Rogue One.
Her natural talent with the force due to her Skywalker ancestry is referenced a few times in this film and the others
Indeed, and smaller examples of force use wouldn't have stood out so much, but "supermanning", while unconscious, half-way across the solar system seemed a bit OTT for a first effort...

Yeah it was a bit Mary Poppins! Lol
Things I liked:
Mark Hamill' s performance! I didn’t even mind the green milk bit – underlined the fact that he’d gone a bit feral and unhinged.
BB8 – Especially the Dutch-boy-with-fingers-in-the-dyke bit aboard the X-Wing.
Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley.
Laura Dern’s light-speed Kamikaze run.
Snoke – A surprisingly charismatic baddie in his gold Hugh Heffner dressing gown. Wonder how they’ll crow-bar his back-story in now?
The Millennium Falcon swooping in on the final battle.
Cool new ships/vehicles, e.g. the Tie Silencer and the GorillAT-ATs.
Things I didn’t like:
I know historical precedent should have prepared me for this, but anyone with an understanding of physics superior to that of a Flat-Earther is in for a rough two and half hours. Lots of bits where I was laughingly suspending disbelief in order to let them get on with telling the story, e.g. the fact that the Star Destroyers can’t catch up to the Resistance ships, because they’re “smaller and lighter”, or the fact that their weapons lose effectiveness beyond a certain range, despite the fact that they’re projected energy weapons being used in a vacuum. Also not sure how effective free-fall bombing would be in space, although I suppose it’d be OK since they were in the gravity well of a planet? Might work on a conveyer belt, I suppose…
The Leia as Mary Poppins bit.
Monte Carlo in space.
The tone and language of a lot of the humour was jarringly contemporary – not bad as such, just felt out of place.
Not necessarily a bad thing (and it didn’t bother me), but it was a bit self-consciously right-on, e.g. mature female intellect trumping youthful willy-waving belligerence (Holdo winning out over Poe), the aforementioned Monte Carlo in space bit and the part Rose (not-conventionally-attractive female hero with a social conscience) plays in it.
What is 27 b slash 6?
new tyre size. you heard it hear first.
You mean the 'you're on hold, is that Admiral Hux?'stuff?!?! I thought that was absolutely amazing!!! So irreverent, definitely stuck a much needed finger in the eye of po-faced science fiction.
As above. i think the Star Wars films have always had humour, but just too much of it in this was childish, good to have maybe the scene with the Porgs and Chewbacca, but then it was just to much having then all over the Falcon, then again with the "diamond dog" things at the end, seems they got a bit carried away, i am expecting them both to have their own 20 minute xmas special films now like Frozen and the other Disney films.
I think the Leia scene where she gets back the bridge hovering in space after it is destroyed, just being so naff, kind of turned me slightly against the film. I think it is why i liked Rogue One, that tougher, darker edge to it (like Empire before)
3/ TFA raised various threads and questions which all seem to now be irrelevant.
It was as if millions of plot threads cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.
nice to see the return of the single-plane space explosion though!anyone with an understanding of physics
There was also something I read somewhere that suggested that she was actually more powerful in the Force that Luke, but never pursued it and never had any interest in exploiting it. But it fits the current zeitgeist of having strong powerful women in the film so showing her as being as powerful as Luke in the Force fits, and it was hinted in the original films that she had some Force awareness and ability. The whole scene of her flying through space back towards the cruiser was a bit naff.
I thought it was very good, in keeping with the whole Star Wars thing with some genuinely jaw-dropping moments. Us oldies have to remember this is a kids film and not intended for us specifically. It has to change slightly as things have moved on and it needs to appeal to a variety of audiences. It's all about the merchandising at the end of the day.
7/ Since when were Finn and Rose pilots (Finn needed Poe to pilot the TIE in TFA)? Was I the only one hoping Finn was going to actually sacrifice himself and fly into the laser?
They were effectively speeders, so just like cars rather than proper space craft.
Despite what I wrote above, I did like lots of elements of the film, but those 1st 3 issues were significant enough to spoil it for me.
Things I enjoyed;
- The opening sequence/battle
- Rey and Ren's "connection" and dark/light ambiguity
- Throne-room fight
- Luke and Rey's "training" (although it was a bit drawn out)
- Poe being the new Han
I did find the physics distracting. There did seem to be some unusual gravity in the space battles.
Also Amilyn Holdo said "Godspeed rebels". That and a several other cultural references didn't fit with continuity. I'm not a massive star wars geek and I noticed.
Still enjoyed it though.
