My estate seems to be going flag/cheese rolling mad already!

Counted 4 St. George flappies, down my street alone today!

I thought it was about time they started that scheme up again.

You know, the one where drivers of less than average intelligence have to display a white flag with a red cross on their vehicle, and the thicker they are the more flags they have to display.

Works a treat, you can spot the intellectually challenged from miles away and keep out of their way.

I think that rule could well work with property owners too 😉

This is especially funny when the patriotic soul fixes their beloved plastic made in China St Georges flag to their foreign car.

You should take a drive around some Areas of East Lancashire. Darwen for example had a St George's weekend last week - a Celebration of Englishness no less. The whole place is decked out in red and white crosses. Big flags hanging from every shopfront.

Its never been like this before. Someone more cynical than I would suggest that it was a desperate attempt by sitting labour MPs and councilors to appear patriotic in an area where the BNP are garnering an unhealthily large support. Is there an election coming up by any chance?

Its home for me MF for the time being.

You know you live in a rough area, when your family refuse to park their car in your street when they visit 😉

I've never found a problem on my estate. Granted, I don't allow the staff to erect flags on the tied cottages.

Might also be to do with the forthcoming world cup where the Inn-ger-lernd players will mostly be watching johnny foreigner kick a football around. If you think there's a lot of flags now, just wait 6 weeks. Or perhaps those will all be to do with the BNP as well?

From Channel4 news;

"Tesco expects to sell 800,000 flags, 500,000 footballs & is launching a England WAG 'bag for life' by Alex Gerrard."

Am I the only one who always hopes we won't qualify?

Too true, the wagon is stationary and still has its full compliment of wheels.

Yes, it's really crap how people get behind the national team in the World Cup. 🙄

The only thing more certain than thousands of St George crosses appearing during a World Cup summer is thousands of miserable gits whinging about people putting flags on their cars. People from lower socio-economic groups have interests and passions too. A bit of national pride during the biggest football tournament in the world, is it that bad?

Are you equally outraged when Wimbledon is on and there's hundreds of middle-aged women (intellectually challenged I presume) waving Union Jacks and wetting their knickers over Tim Henman or Andy Murray?

I was under the impression all these flags were to do with Billy Braggs attempt to reclaim the flag from the right wing nutters. It's bad enough that the BNP wave the George cross, but Wayne Rooney and co! The country is finished.

I'm all for supporting the national team in the world cup.

I'm against the months of retail meltdown that seem to precede it.

watching that on telly actually makes me physically cringe. Give me a tattooed sunburnt bloke in an England top waving a pit bull in one hand and a flag in the other any day. At least then everyone else is scared of us. Rather than pitying the poor idiots who've escaped from the old folks home.

good for you

I'm English and a football fan. I support a League 1 team. Hopefully soon to be a Championship team.

I couldn't give a rat's arse about the national team, bunch of overpaid prima donnas that they are. Good luck to them but I shall be doing my best to avoid watching any of the FIFA 2010 World Cup

Do you support Leeds or Charlton john _drummer?

I have got no problem with people wanting to stick a flag on their car/house etc.

Just another thing for the stuck up STW'er to get a bee in his/her bonnet about.

I was expecting one of these threads to appear in typical grumpy STW stylee. FFS only in England would we criticise others for displaying the national flag around St Georges day and the upcoming world cup tournament.

FWIW, in the 2002 world cup in used some red electrical tape to create a St Georges flag on the bonnet of my old white Vauxhall Nova..... 😛

I'm English and I like the George Cross but I dislike football.

But international football is about the only opportunity when most English people feel comfortable waving our flag.

I've asked it before, but what has patriotism got to do with what you spend money on? Can you only be patriotic if you buy everything from the UK?

my car has a scottish flag - on the licence plate. I didn't ask for it but I like to think that if I ever drive down to england everyone will take note of how proud my car is to have been registered in scotland. I actually think it's quite nice - doesn't harm anybody
