I don't think "teenager spouts irritable shit on internet" in 2012 is a huge deal. I was puzzled about whether she thinks "coon" means what I think it means though.

The third definition on Urban Dictionary strongly suggests she doesn't. It's heavily disputed, but all those definitions seem to be. 😕

Meh, rule one of student politics is never take anything that student politicians say as meaning anything. there is literally no less important "political" position in the whole country.

FWIW (and I might be overthinking what was said) but if you're meeting to discuss how to stop student occupations/political actions being dominated by ranty straight white guys (and they often do get flooded with leftie middle aged newspaper sellers with no links to the uni), then it might be fair enough to request that that meeting is also a "safe space" from ranty straight white guys. As a ranty straight white guy myself, I don't think that "my voice" isn't heard in academia.

What does BME and non-binary mean in relation to ethnicity?

BME usually means "black and minority ethnic"

Non-binary usually means people who don't conform to a male or female gender identity.

Yeah. Don't disagree very fundamentally with this. It's the slightly awkward interaction between the idea of "safe spaces" and the freedom for (for example) islamists to insist that the women sit over there ----> that gets so problematic.

So if I dressed up in an African lady's outfit would I be allowed to attend their BME-only event?

I find it hard to believe the editor's twitter account hasn't been hacked. 😯

Perhaps I'm just a product of a bygone era, but even for a student newspaper editor that seems a little spicy.

The NUS Women's conference passed a rather odd motion condemning cross-dressing as a form of fancy dress. I strongly suspect that turning up in an African lady's outfit would be met with remarkably earnest disapproval.

🙂
