Reckon your favourite film is the one amongst many DVDs that you will happily watch over and over. With that in mind I can't say I am excited by the thought of watching the godfather films or other classics. I feel the Departed is a cracking film that iv watched many times and never loses its appeal. Great story, great cast and humour. It's got my vote.
I disagree with that: IMO the best films are the ones that stay with you long after they have finished. You don't need to watch them that often for them to affect you.
I'm like that with music: Some of my favourite albums are ones that I don't listen to that often, and yet I can still remember virtually the whole of each album enough to have the tunes and lyrics going through my head.
e.g. Iron Man: A film I can watch over and over, and yet I think Goodfellas or Apocalypse Now or The Day the Earth Caught Fire or Pulp Fiction or etc etc are films that move me more, and I don't feel the need to watch those over and over.
+1 for Ferris Bueller
Fletch.
Thread closed.
I'm not sure I'd equate "favourite" with "best". There are plenty of what would be pretty ordinary films that are amongst my favourites. Put up against "great" films, they'd come up fairly short.
Withnail and I

DD > agreed. I deliberately meant "favourite," sorry for the thread drift.
It's just not good enough Cougar. Sorry. 😐
I'm terribly sorry. I shall of course flagellate myself forthwith.
Highlander 2 obviously 😆
Favourite- it's a bit wishy washy maybe but I love Garden State. Good luck exploring the infinite abyss!
2001 love the odd slowness and formality of it combined with the wtf ending.
Taxi Driver
La Haine
For a kids film, I can't get bored with Despicable Me.
Cinema Paradiso, cried like a baby, don't watch the directors cut tho', goes on forever!
Boondock saints
Usual suspects
Seven
Robocop
Leon
But if I really had to pick a favourite
true romance.
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
Bedknobs & Broomsticks.
Singing in the Rain.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Got to be Rear WIndow, then anything by the Coen Brothers, Seven Samurai, Alien and The Good The Bad and the Ugly.
I think bikebuoy just listed his favourites rather than the greatest. Fan of musicals BB? 🙂
Yup 😳
I luv em. 😀
May I diverse to suggest, what is the best trilogy or series of three films with same charachters/plotline. I don't think you can beat the Christopher Nolan Batman films. All three are belters.
[s]Bladerunner[/s]
[s]Star Wars[/s]
Brazil
[s]Reservoir Dogs[/s]
[s]Amelie[/s]
Blazing Saddles
Predictable but Godfather 1 & 2 are pretty awesome , City of God and Life is Beautiful are pretty ace. For a final scene Blade Runner is hard to beat.
Blazing Saddles
Now there is a film I can watch over and over again.

Jason Bourne disagrees, if you want to keep to actioney stuff (though mainly because of Dark Knight Rises tbh)
Yikes.. best... hard to pick but these are up there
Lawrence of Arabia
Blade Runner
2001
Alien
Lord of the Rings
Fight club
Star Wars
Princess Bride
Usual suspects
Apocolypse Now
Something by the Coen Bros
Something by Tarantino
funny that most of these movies are >10 years old...
I saw "In a better world" recently - it was surprisingly good.
Looking forward to Cloud Atlas - expecting it to be messy but amazing
Best trilogy? Lord of the Rings.
Oh and of course life of Brian
Sorry can't pick just one!!
Stuff like this is so subjective isn't it? Some of the films posted so far are in my 'worst film ever' list. And I'm sure my nominee will be in other people's similar list.
Fight Club.
Clever film, awful title. But really, really well made. The title put off so many people who have probably not watched it as as result. It's not about fighting. But very clever. I could watch it again and again.
Can I just add, Brad maybe be a marmite actor but I think he really is very good indeed. His biggest problem is that he's very good looking. Fight club is his second best acting role with twelve monkeys being his best. And Edward Norton is just ace anyway. Finally we have Helena Bonham Carter who was sex in this film. Just sex.
Yeah gotta agree with you Samuri, I might have mentioned 10 odd films but Fight Club is probably in all truth, my favouritist
Page 4 and no Midnight Express!! also original Planet of the Apes, still love Rambo , really enjoying introducing my lad to all my old classics Black Hawk Down last week, forgot how goodit is.
If Local Hero is already claimed, then Lawrence, with Kelly's Heroes* in reserve.
*I don't say it's outstanding, but I could watch it lots.
No mention of Shrek yet , can't believe that.
For impact I would say the matrix, watched 3nights in a row when I first saw it, still love it.don't like watching it with anyone else as they inevitably interrupt.
The Searchers.
Impossible question, everyone will have a different answer - there are so many that stay with me. In categories:
Best oldie:
The Manchurian Candidate (Frank Sinatra !)
Best Hitchcock:
Psycho
Rear Window
Best Foreign/Epic:
Mongol
The Piano
Best including Spaceships:
Aliens
Bladerunner
Best Arthouse:
Being John Malkovich
I've Heard the Mermaids Singing
Best Comedy:
Airplane (aka Flying High)
Best Elvis:
Jailhouse Rock
Always makes me cry award:
Once Were Warriors
But the jury prize goes to:
How I Ended This Summer (the Russian one, not that thing with M*l G****n)
the only film I started watching with a full bottle of wine, and ended with a full bottle of wine, was so engrossed.
****s sake! Any one can rhyme off ten films, its one, only one film. 😉
... which is what he said in his conclusion. Easy there, Barry Norman.
But that's just it - there is no One Film To Rule Them All. Can I post my Worst Films I Have Ever Suffered now ? Can I include Matrix 2, even though I walked out after 10 minutes ??
Worst films... Natural Born Killers - the only film I've ever walked out on
Betty Blue (37* le matin) my all time favourite.
First time I saw it I was about 19, I get round to watching it at least once a year.
Worst film? Life of Pi is close, really wanted the tiger to rip his face off.
Betty Blue (37* le matin) my all time favourite.
I don't know if I ever saw that film, but the guy I stayed with at Uni had a massive poster for it on his wall.
Worst film I ever saw was Open Water. Truly dire.
Hmm, I think my Worst List may offend some people, quite a few of them have been named already as Bests. I'll keep that pearl of wisdom and taste to myself methinks.
I thought Open Water had it's merits. Two incredibly unlikeable people die a lonely and horrific death. Would have been better as a short though, as it really only had one small premise.
Worst film?
Johnny English Reborn.
Really, really, really should have walked out of that but it was a wet Wednesday in October in Ilfracombe and there was fvck all else to do.
The guy sitting behind me clearly thought it was the funniest film ever made. He was wrong.

Oh for God's sake get on with it. 😀
New thread though, eh?
It's all subjective - it's only opinion.
No one's opinion is better or more valid than anyone elses. If anyone gets offended then they really have no business calling themselves an adult.
Taxi Driver,...or Goodfellas,...or The Deer Hunter, or the Godfather part II
Yeh,. yeh... De Niro rules!
No problem, it has to Lawrence of Arabia. I could name another ten that come close but won't!
Savior
Brazil
Love Actually
End of thread
There's is too many great films to pick just one.
But I'll say Return of the King as no one has mentioned it yet
Toy Story
Silence of the lambs
