I've just got a little Acer netbook for work and it's running Linux. Is there anything I should know, recommended programs, weaknesses, plusses etc. Is it good or should I try and get Windows on it it? I know it also has its problems but at least I know my way around it.
Finding my XP disk is cracked and is now a coaster today (installing a new HD)!
Downloaded Ubuntu which has been the sweetest install of a OS I have ever had to do.
Still looking around, working things out, but its been a easy switch so far for me 😉
I ried Ubuntu some 3 years ago. It was fine but... never managed to master it. Too weird for me (or was it me being impatient?).
Depending upon what you want to do there are applications for just about anything.
Weaknesses are video editing apps and some distributions can be a bit hit and miss re wireless.
Other than that welcome to the wonderful world of free software and support (yep there are loads of Linux forums where you can get lots of help).
only issue i have with ubuntu is flash player , its a known issue , there is a fix but i cba reformatting with another version of ubuntu to sort it so ill live without youtube ...
so so easy to network in ubuntu compared to windows. and so so easy to get into supposed " secure" windows filesystems through the wireless network ....
can pretty much walk into the pc upstairs using my laptop and request any files etc without my parents knowing :S quite scary really....
If you're used to Windows, I'd probably install Windows.
If you fancy learning another OS, linux isn't that hard to get your head around, and there's loads of documentation out there. Get past the initial learning curve and it's perfectly pleasant.
Most of the necessary email/web stuff is probably pre-installed, you may need to install Open Office but that's about it... If you find some file extension you can't play/open google it, or post on here, someone will know what to do with it!
Thanks guys, is there a way I can watch movies? I already use Clone DVD and any DVD on my PC.
Raglan - Try VLC,you can install it using synaptic package manager unders System>Adninistration. Should be a breeze.
EDIT - Justrealised that the new Acer Netbooks are running Linpus Lite, in which case ignore the above instructions as I assumed it would be running Ubuntu.
There should be some kind of Package manager that will let you install VLC if it does not already let you watch movies/video.
yup - vlc, works a treat
and open offce
also (for me) openProj - Project Management
Does openProj support MS Project files?
It's Linpus Linux Lite installed, is this the most useful/stable version or should I install some thing else?

What do you really want to do with the machine? If it's only email and web, why not give Linpus a spin and see how it works?
