Beach is good for long walks, we did a lovely walk to Tywyn and back when we went. Barmouth is fun in a "kiss me quick" hat kinda way, Portmadog (of prisoner fame)  is a wee drive up the road and is genuinely worth a look if you've never been. Ynys Hir nature reserve is a lovely place, lots of walks in it.

There’s a nice fish & chip shop !

But you haven’t really said what you’re looking for.

There are some nice beaches / sand dunes all along the coast that can be accessed at various points

Cadair Idris is a nice walk (reasonably hard)

Other than that OS map and look around

To me Porthmadog is a bit of a dump and a fair bit up the coast.

The estuary bridge at Barmouth is a nice walk from the south side, Barmouth itself can get very busy at weekends

‘Mach Loop’ is interesting if you like aircraft and have plenty of time to waste. I wouldn’t take the dog though the noise is incredible given how close some of the jets get

Portmierion is The Prisoner place, and worth a visit. Porthmadog has the Purple Moose brewery, also worth a visit.

Lots of steam trains, if that's your thing

Miniature Steam Train from Tywyn (seem to remember one over Mach way as well).

Caves near Corris (King Arthur's Labyrinth)

Centre for Alternative Technology (near Mach)

Lots of nice walks (e.g. Dolgoch Waterfalls)

Barmouth for trashy sea side stuff

Loads to do! Used to live there. You don't need to go far. Some big beaches there. Just out of town you can park up, cross the railway, and have the beach all to yourself. Aberdyfi has some great beaches, Tywyn is old school seaside and lovely for that. Great drive inland from there, and if lucky the countryshow may be on. Mach is proper odd, and the alt tech centre up the hill is actually interesting. No need to go North of Barmouth / Harlech really as you are then just driving everywhere for little gain. Aberystwyth is OK during the day, but can be entertaining at night. My tip? Just chill and limit the driving.

Tal y Llyn railway is the one which inspired Rev. Awdry and the Thomas the Tank Engine stories.
