I dare say many will disagree but I think he was part of decent politics back in the day.
Almost all I remember of him is that he put the 'spit' in Spitting Image.
A thoroughly decent Man, but not in power enough to implement any decent plans he had.
When i was working in a hotel in Edinburgh during a sumer holiday from University. I met him a hotel corridor and he stopped and went out of his way to speak to me - so the only thing i can add is he was a really nice guy (from our brief once meeting).
Considering most other guests in the hotel who wouldnt acknowledge your existance, and Bob Monkhouse was staying at the same time and he was wasnt as nice lets just say.....

Always the impression I got whenever he spoke. Though arguably paved the way for New Labour and it's lurch to the right, but always felt he was in it out of conviction and not for himself
He even managed to handle the 'Tub Of Lard' incident on HIGNFY with fairly good grace considering the circumstances.
Again, seemed a basically decent individual even if I didn't agree with him on everything politically.
He presented the prizes at the fell race in the Peak District village where he lived. I only chatted with him briefly a couple of times there (as a middling athlete and then Labour member) and he came across as he did in public life, a thoroughly decent man.

...from back in the good old days when this was the basis of political discourse, rather than the increasing "you disagree with me, therefore you are an idiot/evil" polarisation we have today.
