Hi,

I have just received a letter from HMRC stating that they are going to charge me £1200 for not filing my tax return for the year ended April 2011.

I never received anything from them advising that I had to complete a self assessment form. I used to do these when I had a company car after I changed jobs five years ago to one without a car I was told that I did not need to do them.

We did move house in March 2011 so it is possible the letter got lost although we did get our mail forwarded (Royal Mail managed to cock this up).

Any advice on how I should proceed? - surely they cannot just send one letter that does not have to be signed for, sit back for over a year then start demanding thousands of pounds?

This feels like dealing with the worst type of dodgy car clamping company!

Did you call them to explain?

I've always found them very helpful (really).

Have you phoned them to talk it over?
I'm pretty sure you should be able to sort it out. They aren't evil.

Er call them rather than singletrack. If you tell them what you know they can do something about it.

I'm not a taxman though

Just call them and explain. I got a scary bill and demand for almost £1000 pounds of unpaid NI, because on their system I was still self employed, one phone call to tell them I'd been employed PAYE for the past 5 years sorted it pretty quickly.

I have phoned them and the guy I spoke to said that he would send out the forms and that I could write an appeal letter.

I am certain that I never received anything from them asking me to complete a return - I guess proving that will be the hard part.

I wrote a successful appeal letter last year for late return.
Good luck.

I'm not sure if they sent out reminders this year or if they did they were very late, I certainly don't remember getting mine. As other's have said they do seem reasonable over cancelling the 'fine' part if there is a reasonable reason

I had this as well a few years ago. I appealed and was successful with getting rid of 3 years of fines and costs but not the last one. I had to pay up front ( quite a bit) then got it back (mostly) afterwards.

They never explained how I managed to go 4 years with no letters to my home address or to my employers.

They were very pleasant to deal with and seemed reasonable though somewhat confused. They do not explain themselves though, you have ask them all the questions and badger them for answers IME.

Thanks for the responses. I have managed to find various PAYE coding notices but nothing stating that I had to fill in a return. Lets hope they will be reasonable.
