I can see where you are coming from and we are looking to develop an app for our users which would ideally include forum access.However, if I were to enable Tapatalk it would be the last job I would do here as we would lose the advertising revenue which pays me and my colleagues wages. 🙂
Of course if adverts are a problem and eating into your bandwidth then there is a Premiere Light option which will allow you turn them off for a mere £1.49 per month.

I don't mind adverts, they're necessary for funding - but surely there must be a chance of making a mobile friendly site with mobile friendly adverts??

bbPress 2.4 is meant to have a mobile theme built in; however, it's still only a release candidate.
Like I wrote earlier - have an ad-free mobile app for Premium users.
...or have a mobile app, using iADs, and have an in-app purchase option to remove the ads.
