getting my first ever car tomorrow, and i guess i should get breakdown cover.

its a pretty old (1998!!), but low milage (57000) ford Ka. i know the people whohave owned it from new, and know they took good car (FSH etc)

car runs fine, but has had a bit of oil smoke come from the engine once or twice in the past year - mechanic says its fine, just got a bit hot or something
anyway, not interested in discussing this...

but breakdown cover - talk to me.

AA? RAC? tesco or ASDA!?

what should i look out for, what should i be paying?

you often get it with your insurance, so have a look at that.

We've always been with the RAC and think they are truly excellent.

insurance will be with Aviva. looked on their site, and the quote for adding breakdown was £102 (with RAC)

looking on moneysupermarket it seems like i can get cover for £30 from ICbreakdown.co.uk (Bronze level) - thats with everything apart from homestart and keycover.

can i go wrong with that?

I have the basic £28 RAC cover, but with Quidco it ends up being £8.

Quidco have really good deals for AA/RAC.

Tesco's let you pay with clubcard points for cheaper prices

ASDA was over £70 (car over 10 yrs old so can't get basic).

with the cheapest RAC, what happens if its real late at night, and the garages are closed (assuming it can't be fixed by the roadside)? do i just get dumped there or what?

I get a 1/3 off AA cover being an IAM driver geek. Helps a fair bit.

Don't bother - just call them out if you breakdown
The AA only charge an extra tenner or so to join at the roadside, you may go years before you need them.

We got M&S car insurance which included RAC cover for a very reasonable total price

Alternatively just buy a Honda, all those wasted years of breakdown cover 🙂

solved.

got aviva breakdown cover (RAC) - £84 (for better than basic standard) - BUT it took 10% off my car insurance.

total cost less than normal insurance price + relatively shit breakdown cover.

😀

Aye, it usually works well if you can get it with your insurance. Another good tip is Topcashback, they often have mad deals on breakdown, I got my AA cover for about £6 after cashback.

Join British Cycling for £13 (which covers your arse for various bike accidents too) and you get 25% off with the AA.

re:uplinks suggestion....the aa charge £110 plus whatever the price of there basic membership is that day(roughly £50)if you phone in a breakdown situation.and for that if its not fixable you only get a 10 mile recovery!!!...FACT so dont try that one.

Not fact I joined on the side of the road and had my van recovered from Andover to Somerset about 60 miles.I think I should have paid some extra mileage charge but never got a bill from them
