Hiya,
clicked on my gold shield in the system's tray, bottom right hand corner as per usual, and nothing happened!
A right click "open symantec" nothing.
I opened it from ' All programmes' and updated the virus def's, cos thats what I was trying to do, but why the change? what's happened to stop me opening it from the systems tray?
anyone with any ideas?
cheers

Whatever the question, Drac is right...you do need to get rid of symantec, it's just a matter of time before you realise how right his answer was 😉

Christowkid I have just had a nose on Norton help centre its one of the days top reported problems and it is solvable with an update and restart.

Seriously dont give up on Norton I had a speed problem earlier in the year posted on here for advice and all I got was everyone telling me to dump Norton turned out it was a problem with my phone line.

The Elflords of tinternet seem to have it in for Norton at the moment but it works its the Ford Mondeo of internet security dull but reliable

I had a prob with Norton.

Wouldn't load up as normal.

I had to reinstall it using the norton removal tool and restart then reinstall which takes 50 seconds now.

Everything is fine again.

Must be a recent bug.

Check services under the run menu.

1st bug in ages but solid as hell when its running.

A restart may be the best idea. If the tray icon is not responding then somethings not working or busy. A restart generally should sort this kind of problem.

Just update and run scheduled scan, all ok there.
Re-started and shut down a few times, still playing up. I can only access it via 'All Programmes'.
....but both using daughters' desk tops, works fine from systems tray as normal.
Just wondering if i've de-activatedthe systems tray icon in some way - everything else is running fine. not the end of the world, but just wondering what I've done or what's up!

You might have accidentally made the icon inactive

try right clicking on an unused section of task bar this should open a window with a list of tasks at bottom left click properties

this will open taskbar and startup properties click notification area tab you shoulsd see icons hide when in inactive with a check in the box

to the right you should see customize click this this will show you currently active icons and unused icons below it

find the Norton icon click on it and you can select show press ok and ok again see if this brings it up

Might be an idea to run scandisk and disk defragmenter (right click on your c: drive in my computer and select properties/tools), scandisk will need a reboot, then defrag, and reboot again...

If still no joy then you will probably have to uninstall as zaskar says, reboot, run 'norton removal tool', downloadable from symantec, reboot and reinstall (making sure you have your software key at hand). and update... again.

Or you could try looking at symantec.com for customer support to see if your problem is listed there.

As an ex user of norton I can only agree with drac and lodious, run as fast as you can from the corporate bloatedness that is symantec, there are better and cheaper/free security softwares out there.

This kind of problem happened repeatedly when I was using norton and each time I had to download a fresh copy of the removal tool.
