I saw this last night and have to say I was completely blown away. I wasn't expecting much but the visuals were truly impressive.
That's about it but would like to hear other opinions on it or other films that you didn't think would be all that but turned out to be so much more.

i thought the bad guy was a bit silly in sunshine, shame coz i love the rest of the film

the hangover was better than expected, tho my expectations were low!

the jacket- its got kiera knightly in and shes usually a bad sign but its quite good

Diving bell and the butterfly. It's about a man who's in hospital and he can't move or speak, it's sooo moving and beautiful. I was in tears at the end. Lush

Funny how our opinions differ. I thought Sunshine was utterly awful.

Tangled. I'm not a Disney fan (or animation in generally really) but this film is immense fun and very beautiful.

Bunny & The Bull was odd.

I was surprised that Rise of The Planet of the Apes wasn't poo poo.

Rise of The Planet of the Apes wasn't poo poo.

It was! 😉

I quite liked Sunshine and also Event Horizon. Gattaca suprised me too, as did Solaris - both films I really enjoyed, staying on the space theme.

The science in Sunshine was rubbish, but apart from that it was ok.

Garden State was a bit of a shock, quite a good film.

50/50 - thought it was going to be just another one of those lifeless American films, but it was actually pretty moving.

Sunshine faded (sorry!) really badly towards the end IMO.

You do realise that Prof Brian Cox was the science advisor on that film don't you? 😀

I thought it was an excellent film.

Yeah, I'd say Source Code was better than expected too.

Solaris was bloody awful. We won tickets to see it from the local paper. A mate of mine who is the journalist who ran the competition phoned me afterwards and apologized.

Little Miss Sunshine. Funny & sad all in the same film.

Sunshine. Neither funny nor sad, and not really much of anything else imo either.

Solaris was a poor rip-off of the brilliant Russian original.

Sunshine would have been great if the originally penned storyline had been used.

Human Centipede 2, the plot line was such a nice surprise. Not even slightly predictable having seen the first, and the actors had the whole thing stitched up tight they worked as one unit so well. Their relationship was almost symbiotic

I'll probably get flayed for this but I thought Dorian Gray was better than I expected it to be.

Before Sunrise

I thought it was going to be typical frothy romantic pish that i normally hate but there was nothing else on tv that night and i couldnt sleep so i watched it and godamnit it was just about perfect and felt like it was a movie made specifically to talk to me. Its sequel Before Sunset is every bit as good too.

I quite like the first bit of Sunshine but thought that once it got onto the Freddy Kreuger in space thing it turned to crap.

The Warrior - Great movie and music from the National.
Moon - Amazing performance from Sam Rockman and again great soundtrack.
Life Is Beautiful - Funny and tragic at the same time
City Of God - Just Amazing for such a low budget movie too break so many boundaries.

Also World's Greatest Dad. Fantastic film, Williams best IMO.

You do realise that Prof Brian Cox was the science advisor on that film don't you?

Doesn't mean they listened to him lol.

Surely any film thread should have a "Debbie Does Dallas"-type response by now.

Executive Decision - wasn't expecting anything at all, so pleasantly surprised when it was an entertaining romp. Plus they killed off Stephen Seagal in the first 15 minutes!

King Kong is another one which was surprisingly good fun, albeit a bit long.

Event Horizon was a great film. Had Sam Neil in it ffs what more do you want !

Sunshine good. Moon better.

How I Ended This Summer best film I have seen in many years.

And sorry Peter J but King Kong was overblown, overlong and frankly unecessary. And I am biased cos one of my dad's vintage cars was in it.

Fair point, Event Horizon was good. I remember seeing it in an almost empty cinema and nearly sh*****g myself.
Stardust should have been rubbish but I think the quality of Neil Gaiman's writing must have rescued it.

That "john carter" disney film was slagged off on the radio yesterday, lost 200 million dollars at the box office.
Biggest flop in disney history.
