So we're about a year on from the hack attack and the subsequent adotion of the new forum.
I think most of us would agree that it's MUCH better than the old one, but what little niggle would you like ironed out?
Or is it beautiful, no matter what they say?
I'll start:
It'd be nice if the "User Activity/Recent Replies" bit was ordered by "Most Recent Reply", rather than "You Last Replied" as then it would be much easier to quickly see new activity on posts you've been involved in.
I think its fine as it is, all the little Quirks go hand in hand with all the quirky stw members.
Post reply notifications back.....or do we have that and i am being an idiot?
Also the ability to mutli-quote. Well the quote code improved altogether to be honest.
I'd like to see a 'post counter' in my profile. Because I'm a saddo like that. ๐
It almost goes without saying that the site's way better.
Some suggestions
- It'd be good if you could type in the user name on an advanced search rather than having to download the whole dropdown list of names (particularly when used on a mobile)
- If a post is made at the same time as you refresh the forum list then no 'time since last post' is shown (since presumably it's zero seconds) so you can't go directly to the last post
- It'd still be better to turn on email notifications (and be able to turn them off!) than have to use RSS - maybe this could be tied in with the 'favourites' functionality.
email notification would rock
A "threaten" button in user profiles.
Personally I'm happy with the RSS notification. Most threads on here are way too active for me to want emails whenever someone posts!
Lots of people ask for recommendations for things, holidays, bikes, tyres etc. I'd like to know what they actually choose and what their opinion of it was.
sort threads by last posted as suggested first is a great idea, I also really like a list of stw users recommendations... We should solve that democratically by a poll.
Have a look at www.radbmx.co.uk. Their site is mega user friendly and has all of the suggestions listed. I know a few users on here are on there too.
Only recently joined and think the format really good.
That said I do get fed up with the constant sales plugging posts,
should really stick to adverts and banners for this to leave the forum free for chat ๐
More cowbell!
also less flash, slows everything down, nearly as bad as bikeradar. If I open 5 tabs in firefox all on stw then my superfast machine locks up..
How about a 'personal message' function like some other forums have? So you don't have to display your email in your profile, and it would stop all the 'does anyone have XXXXXXX's email address' threads too.
still needs a button at the bottom once a reply has been posted to take you back to the forum index to avoid having to scroll all the way to the top then click on it. I saw some option has been added, can't remember what it is but its a bit halfway house. Go to top*, maybe?
It just needs 'Forum Summary - Bike - Chat - Classifieds' Links at the bottom of the page, too.
*EDIT: 'Skip to Top'

also less flash
Frankly, I'm hurt.

perhaps the 'home' key on your keyboard?
New post notification which the old forum had. ie a little pic next to the thread when there is unread content / new posts.
I haven't worked out how to simply see friends (or relations) most recent posts. On the old system it was simple, but now you don't appear to be able to do it.

I'd miss you... ๐ณ
I'd like to see the "posts" column replaced with "replies". In effect it just means changing the title and subtracting 1 from the value there.

I agree that an email per post would be annoying, but it would be good if it could notify of the next post after you ... so you don't have to check back for replies
Its ok to me with all its little foibles
Perhaps an anti "which tyre for this and that" button !
A "nuke it from orbit" button would be cool.

That would be good although I've got used to trawling through all the posts starting with the most recent. Do find I don't usually get beyond the second page though.

Be good if all you It types could list shortcuts like this for us pc numpties. Ta
perhaps a kind of GPS tracking of the STW users link to multimap or google earth so we can see where they are riding during the day or in the evening or during the weekend, to avoid the "Where are you all riding this weekend? " thread. that will be good i reckon.

Just go to their profile - eg http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/profile/banana shows your most recent posts.
Is it the flash that slows this site up? As a premier member most of the advertising is turned off, but this site can still be painfully slow to load. Perhaps there is an underlying fault that needs addressing?
Simple 'Quote' function.
Ability to sort classifieds by FS and WTD

Surely you'd then have to check your email instead?! It's as quick to go to the site, click your user name to find the threads you've posted/commented on and see if there's any replies that way.

Except a lot of people have email delivered to their phone or have it constantly open etc ...
What really annoys me is the lack of dancing girls and free beer
It just needs 'Forum Summary - Bike - Chat - Classifieds' Links at the bottom of the page, too.
+1 I view the site on my phone and getting back to the thread list is a (minor) pain in the bum.

See above, I don't have a keyboard ๐
Also, that would only take you to the top of the page and not back to the thread list.
ref classifieds....please can sales and wanted items be put into two different areas/places?? if i want to buy something i still have to trawl through loads of people desperatly trying to get stuff with wanted ads...
if your buying read the sales ads only... if you have something you want to get shot of read the wanted ads only....simple.
Preview is broken for some punctuation characters eg. nothing after this ampersand "&" will show up in the preview pane. Particularly irritating when characters in image or web links break the preview (though it all displays fine in the actual post).
And the search-by-username issue that Clubber mentioned - should be able to type in a username directly.
its defo flash for me - if I turn flash off the site runs fine, the problem is then that I cant listen to radio 4 in the background as that needs flash for the iplayer to work..
Captainflashheart, didnt realise you were responsible for all flash? I thought it was just the hearty kind?

How are you turning flash off? The method most people use you can click on things where you want it to be enabled, or even whitelist things like iplayer.
If there is a better way then show me, happy days if I can turn off flash on stw and still listen to iplayer..
Didn't even realise you could disable Flash like that (though I now use Chrome, not FF and there doesn't seem a similar option). We're getting onto slightly dodgy ground here, but I'll just say that I have something under "Extensions" rather than under "Plugins" with "Flash" as part of its name which has the functionality I mention above.
Just thought of another one: there is still a bug where the 40th post sometimes doesn't appear until someone posts the 41st.
I'd rather the posts had a timestamp rather than '3 hours ago, 1 day ago, 2 months ago' etc. Sometimes if something doesn't make sense, its nice to be able to see that maybe two people posted within a few seconds of each other and therefore the response was missed etc.
And on my laptop, the page is too wide so I have to scroll right to click my name to view recent posts etc, it may be something I can fix my end but I haven't bothered...
Can we get an Internet Hard Man Meter for cycnic-al. Just so he knows what he is up against?
Maybe
1 - not hard, just pretending he saw some action once in the TA
...
...
5 - don't mess with me. i will literally rip your face off through the interpipes.
how about some method of rating people on the helpfulness (or lack of) on their posts?
I always seem to struggle with the search thingy i'd like to see that made more effective /simpler g
I would like to see the link text a different colour or perhaps underlined as I find it very difficult to see a link, I have to run my mouse over the text to see one.
It is a different colour. It's green.
But yeah might be better if it was also bold or something for colour blind folk.
Classifieds needs improving - I don't like using it. Need to separate WTD from FS for starters. Ebay style rating would give some more confidence in sellers. Minimum forum participation/period before you can become a seller would also help.
A "nuke" button on threads. If enough users "nuke" it, it gets deleted. So the forum becomes self-moderating.

Trouble is any form of "self-moderating" like that would undoubtedly get abused.
