We will be in touch
ok... currently half way through my first year at uni, have got our house and everything sorted for next year!
the contract on the house starts were renting starts in July, 4 of the 5 people arent staying there for the summer,
one of the guys is..
who should be paying for the electric, water etc?!
He should.
The person using them.
how much realistically do you think it will cost for the one person thats living there?!
Costs me about £30 a month for gas and £30 a month for elec, living alone in a small flat. Full house, elec neednt be higher but gas might be for heating larger volume.
Depends, I'd say. If the water isn't metered why should they be solely responsible for the standing charge? Any metered stuff, I agree they should pay.
you need to record what the meter says the first day of the contract anyway. usually the letting agents asks you to. but do it anyway cos otherwise the electric company will try and rip you off.
when everyone else turns up record it again - then do some calculations. easy really.
i would have thought he should pay for most of the gas and electric, although the rest of you may want to put in a couple of quid each month if anything is being left on standby (e.g. if your freezer is not an auto-defrost you may want to keep it running, or if you have an alarm on the house).
water depends on if it is being paid on a meter or whether you are paying for it quaterly? if on a meter i would make him pay it all, if its on quarterly then you all have an equal share even if you are not living there.
got to be careful with student bills and making sure everyone pays their share otherwise it can all get messy! get it sorted before your rent starts
You all pay the standing charge between you, and he pays the cost of actual energy useage. That seems fair - unless you've all left your massive TVs, stereos and phone chargers left plugged in and on standby.
well we wont have even moved into the house into september, the person in question would be there from may until september,
You'll still be responsible for all the utility bills from the point at which you sign the lease - so you will be paying the standing charge anyway.
legaly - you are all joint and severaly responsible, you all have to pay your share, unless someone does a runner in which case its the responsibility of whoevers left to pay and track down the non payers.
Moraly he should pay the metered rate and you should split the standing charges.
In reality my housemate used about a £15 worth of gas and 'lecy over 3 months (heating off in summer, water was included in the rent, so only cooking and TV.
