So the trolley dollies and men are on strike soon from BA,for a week or more,

Now Eurostar are on strike, for 2 days soon,

Network Rail, signal technicians are on strike in South wales all week,

Not forgetting,Heathrow and Aberdeen airport baggage handlers are out on strike soon, for another few days.

Arent these people grateful to have a job, along with the perks, theres millions out there that could do their job, with no complaint.

The unions will use every opportunity, seeing as there's a (sort of) Labour government in the death throes.

Arent these people grateful to have a job

What a damning indictment of a crap system, that people should actually be "grateful" for having a job.

If after 250 years capitalism still can't figure out a way in which everyone can have a job,
then it is very clearly a failed experiment.

And I can't see the point of giving it another 250 years to try and sort out a mess,
which it is so obviously unable to sort out..

......... revolution is the only solution I fear.

I don't fear revolution. I fear the truth might be a tad unpalatable for some.

And yes, I've got the t-shirt.

The trouble is, if they were grateful for having a job, it would mean business can exploit them.

Oh, hang on a minute...

Yep, I suspect you might be right - there's probably more, but due to the manipulation of the dominant media sources by capitalist organisations, including the Daily Mail, we hear little of all this.

Apparently :

"Merseyside fire crews have started balloting for industrial action short of a strike over plans to cut frontline services."

And

"Chief Fire Officer Tony McGuirk said the Crosby engine would not be reinstated at because of a second ballot looming over overtime, although the FBU have stated that the second ballot does not involve strike action".

Merseyside Fire Crews Start Ballot for Industrial Action Over Plans to Cut Frontline Services

Support for petition to reinstate Crosby’s second fire engine grows as campaigners plan rally in Maghull next

So no strike then.

And apparently this dispute is not about pay. But that didn't stop the Daily Mail from attempting to mislead their readers by suggesting that the FBU would, quote : "exploit Government weakness to demand bumper pay increases from taxpayers."

Note the emotive use of the word "taxpayer" because fire services are funded by council tax, in an attempt to demonise firefighters.

Network Rail,

Eurotunnel,

BA,

Luggage handlers,at Heathrow,

Like i said to start with.

The fire Service recieves a grant from Central Government to fund its services, topped up by the councils.

The fire Service recieves a grant from Central Government to fund its services, topped up by the councils.

So a more appropriate term, would be to refer to the "employer".

Of course the Daily Mail wants their readers to believe that the FBU seeks to "exploit" them personally,
despite the fact that this dispute is about the FBU fighting to protect frontline services for the general public.

Note also the use of the highly emotive term "bumper pay increases" ...... even though "bumper" is a meaningless figure.

How much does the Daily Mail charge their readers for reading this bollox ? ........of course you're going to tell me that you don't read the Daily Mail - aren't you Project ?

Yes it is.

And long after we are all dead and buried, I can assure you, that generations in the distant future will look back incredulously at existing social conditions.

In much the same way that we look back in disbelief at the social conditions of past centuries.

One day, the "millions of unemployed throughout the world" will be the stuff of history books. But not under the present social models.

And technological ability. And fashion sense. Many things improve over time. Though to be fair you do make a good case for the advancement that

250 years [of] capitalism
has given us. Remember Robert Owen, Titus Salt, Joseph Rowantree et al weren't entirely afraid of a little (albeit socially conscienced) capitalism.

Of course I believe* that literacy rates were higher two hundred years ago in Scotland than they are now - so not everything improves. And yes, I am Scots.

*Belief does not necessarily indicate a basis in fact.

igm - across the entire Scots population, or the minority of Scots who actually went to school?
If we accept that 99% of all Scots have nominally attended school then i suspect we would indeed see a decrease in literacy rates between the modern, lazy masses & the relatively wealthy elite who could both afford, and know the benefit of, a school education circa 200yrs ago.

I'm not Scottish BTW

I'm on strike as i type!! Should be at work now but we're in dispute! The local paper reported it and the feedback on their website was the same - should be grateful to have a job etc etc- the article could have been a bit more accurate to be fair.

Fair enough its crap we're in a recession and jobs are scarce but i wont feel one iota of guilt about striking to protect my job and working conditions when management are just using the recession as an excuse to bully people into accepting less.

It's all basically set against a backdrop of slightly lower orders than usual so suddenly i'm worth 20% less pay, and this isn't 20% less til things pick up, its 20% less ad infinitum, we've lost our quarterly bonus, management and staff haven't. We are expected to change shifts at the drop of a hat, minor stuff you may think, but try explaining to your wife she has to quit her job cos you wont be home til half ten and she'll have to sort the kids, then 2 weeks later change back again!! I could go on but i wont, i've prob given you all enough ammo to flame me!!

muddydwarf - religious oppression is a wonderful thing. The Scots kirk of the day not only believed that the common man had a right to read god's word for himself but insisted that he should be forced to. They therefore set up parish schools to teach the masses. Basic literacy in 18th century Scotland was at a level not reached in England until the 20th century.

Beyond that I think I read something somewhere, but I may have made it up.

so not everything improves.

Over time, I would say yes - social conditions improve.

However, man has a tendency to advance at the rate of three steps forward, two steps back.

IIRC, there was a Roman emperor(s) who found the sight of Christians being fed to starving lions both repulsive and inhumane, so had it banned, only for it to be reinstated by subsequent emperors. Despite that, it was eventually banned altogether, and Rome hasn't seen that sort of entertainment for some considerable time now.

In the immediate post-wars years Britain moved three steps forward, in the last few decades it has moved two steps backwards.

Nevertheless man's progress will always relentlessly inch forward - as it has always done so.

Civil war is the answer

tried that, it didn't work. As soon as the head revolutionary popped his clogs, they ushered back in the family that his mob got rid of only a few years earlier.

And can you honestly see the xfactor generation taking part in something "for the greater good" unless there was a no1 single in it for them?
