I have spotted lots of unmarked transit vans driving around London with small cameras on each corner. When google street view went live I assumed these were their vehicles. Now there is more coverage on the equipment they've used it's clear these transit's are nothing to do with street view. So what are they for, government surveying, police? Tin foil hat anyone?
not seen any in deepest, darkest devon yet...
There are some vans that go round with with cameras on the rear corners which are the DVLA checking tax discs.
...but I thought they all said DVLA on them.
Could they be the DVLA's ANPR cameras?
I've seen the DVLA vans, but some are totally unmarked. Might be just missing their graphics.
Some baliffs use them for tracking down parking ticket fine non payers I believe
If they're unmarked, then what piedi says...bailiffs can buy an ANPR system for their van and trawl the streets. They'll be loaded with the details of car number plates that have loads of parking tickets outstanding...but they don't have tax/insurance/MOT info. Obviously, if you're a bailiff, a profession that struggles with its reputation somewhat, you're not going to tell everyone about it...hence them being unmarked. There was a reality TV programme follwing one such bunch a few years back..they had this ANPR thing in their van.
I've seen Smart cars with cameras on top around Lambeth called something Lambeth Council CCTV Unit, 'we're here to [s]stalk[/s] protect you.' It's enough to make you join a militia in deepest Montana.
