Went to Fairford at the weekend for the Air Tattoo having a nose inside various aircraft and noticed that they all smell the same.
It didn't matter which aircraft maker it was, which air force it served with or type of aircraft, they all have the same distinctive smell.
I mentioned this to my son who agreed, as did my dad.
Can anybody tell me why?
Any ex RAF shed some light on it?

is it similar to a vintage car smell?
probably leather, fuel, early plastics, sweat and fear.
Vintage car smell wouldn't be a million miles away.

My motorbike don't smell of no wellingtons.
I work building an maintaining helicopters and it's down to very similar hydraulic fluids and fuel used for the last 50-60years.
All end up smelling the same be it a 40 year old aircraft or a 1 year old one.

Eau de humanity
Metal, burnt F-34 (fuel), hydraulic oil. Older aircraft smell weird too though,like old leather.
