So, youse what are giving up, youse are pretty much all 'heavy' smokers then.

Have you tried giving up before? And if so, why did those attempts fail?

Huws, my caffeine intake has reached epic proportions too!

You cold turkey or NRT?

Good luck fella (be prepared not to poo for a while 😥 - Is this why ex-smokers put on weight??)

Edit- Morgs yup you should be VERY proud!!

I used to smoke about 10 a day when I gave up, so not exactly a heavy smoker, but I was a regular, habitual smoker, i.e. light up first thing in the morning, smoking after meals and drinks, etc., the nabit was strong.

I probably tried to give up 20+ times. Not sure of the main reasons for failure - weed sometimes played a big part though.

This doesn’t bode well for the barrage of stupid questions I’m likely to get at work this afternoon

Elf, not overly (about 10 a day) but for the last 20 years, with a 2 year hiatus when I thought I’d actually kicked it. Unfortunately I fell off my bike and spent 2 weeks at home full to the brim with tramadol with no one to talk to but the man in the newsagents and my neighbours cats.

fenred, 16 hour patches. I keep finding myself absent mindedly rubbing the patch trying to squeeze more delicious nicotine out of it.

In case it helps anyone... I've just had a meeting with a colleague who smokes (at least) a pack a day, as I used to.

He smells like sh1t, I was gagging slightly.

Worst part is realising I used to stink like that.

Best part is realising I no longer do.

TJ - i need a kiss 🙁

I have just, after 337 hours and 35 mins succumbed to a smoke.

Work stress-related.

I felt good at the time, but now feel like a shell of a human. dissappointed with myself, feel guilty, told MsMorgs and got the 'i'm dissappointed' rather than the shouting and screaming (which is far worse as we all know) and now I need a rollicking by you lot.

Come on - no holds barred.....flame me to my very core.

I have already ripped off the shoulder boards of awesomeness

Oh no. You didn't get the 'D' word? EEK! 😯

*shudders*

Don't worry about it. You're still awesome. Just get back to the same mindset as you were a couple of hours ago. Nowts changed. I'm keeping going by thinking how much money I've not spent, and how these none-spent funds are to be re-directed 😀

Satsuma?

Well I can't protect you from TJ, morgs...

... but I can tell you what you probably already know - that one smoke does not take you back to square one. It's a small setback, nothing more. You're not addicted again already; the nicotine in your system is minimal. etc. etc.

So, forget about it, pucker up for TJ and start sewing those shoulder boards back on, dude!

As binners says, regain the mindset and off you go!

No flaming from me. Just a big man hug!

Morgs.... next time you can make it in excess of 500.

Greatness is achieved through adversity, through getting back up when you've been knocked down.

I started smoking again last Thursday week, precisely so I could be on hand to pick you up and help you at this point (well the temptation of some magic smoking substance might also have been a little too much) so let's do this together.

Yeti.

40 hrs and 44 mins smoke free.

S'alright Ho Hum... this time I've taken the Mrs with me. Seems that smoking jsut before you get into bed is one way of making someone realise how bad it smells.

I wouldn't advise it though and I smoked <5 a day.

Morgs - see it as a set back not the end of your efforts. Have some nicontine replacement therapy to hand perhpas?

its a wicked addiction and the things it does to your head is just crazy the way yo can convince yourself that you deserve or need this one fag and its Ok.

So - take your punishment like a man and put it behind you

I can remember before (and almost did this last night) stopping at a garage not even thinking about smoking, filling up and driving off. A mile down the road I realised what I'd done...

'sweet, I'm not actually addicted... so this means I can smoke tonight'

Then stopping at the next garage down the road 😀

It's not going so well for me - a total of 4 yesterday and 4 (so far) today - but at least it's a step in the right direction. There is hardly any baccy left, and I really don't intend to buy any more.
Probably doesn't help that I'm feeling pretty down at the moment, due to lack of money and long-term lack of a man.

Done it once since as well. Once took a fag of someone and ash e lit he said I did not know you smoked .. i dropped it on the floor saying shit I dont I just forgot and walked off.

Good work people good work

I think you are all awesome, in varying degrees. Yeti, I am dissapointed in you old chap, I thought you were iron willed and inspirational. I am sure my mancrush will return over time.

My best defence after 3 and a half months of not smoking is to ask myself if I want to be a smoker again if I am tempted (which is almost never now). The answer is, and always will be, no.

The flipside is that it would almost be worth starting again to get a kiss from TJ. *suppresses the bad thought*

Morning All,

Day 3 for me and feeling strong, particularly as I've just spent an hour and a half stuck in grid-locked traffic for a 7 mile journey to work 👿 I reckon I would have ploughed through 4 or 5 smokes during that time and I didnt even flinch...Chuffed!

However my ongoing blockage problem remains unresolved and I am now feeling VERY uncomfortable 😕

I was stuck in horrendous stationary traffic this morning too. I watched the bloke in front of me puff his way through about 4 fags in about 20 minutes, while listening to some whining, sanctimonious, bleating, mummy-knows-best, health-nazi pussy from the BMA, on five live, proposing banning smoking in cars.

Its enough to make me start again just to piss people like that off. Strokers!

However - I did feel a lot better that the bloke in front used to be me, but isn't any more 😀

Morning all, onwards an upwards morgs, top man! Nearly two weeks now an still have moments where I could murder a cig, they're getting a bit less frequent now though and when temptation arrives it leaves quicker,

Nice one, binners! 8)

I had a weak day a while back, so I pulled out the big guns. Away went the satsumas and out came the ORANGES. Strangely, it made a difference.

Given Fenred's imminent Event Horizon, are we all DOOOMED?

Smoking used to keep me regular as well and I would always struggle when I stopped 🙁

As a result I would switch to All Bran for breakfast and keep some Fybogel or Sennokot in the cupboard if things get really.

You have my sympathies, but give it time and your body will regulate itself again.

Day 2 in the Huw not smoking house, not going too badly, full to the brim with coffee, satsumas (2 for one in waitrose) and hate but no one’s dead yet. Although last night after being told there were going to be a bunch of redundancies at work my studio nearly looked like Francisco de Goya’s Great Deeds Against the Dead. Didn’t smoke though. 🙂

Fenred, I feel your pain, I once went 2 weeks without a poo due to the side effect of some serious pain killers, not something I’d like to repeat again.

I used to smoke about 10 a day when I gave up, so not exactly a heavy smoker, but I was a regular, habitual smoker, i.e. light up first thing in the morning, smoking after meals and drinks, etc., the nabit was strong.

Elf, not overly (about 10 a day) but for the last 20 years

I'm curious as to what people think is 'heavy' smoking. 10 a day = 70 a week = 300 a month = 3600 faygs a year.

Three thousand six hundred cigarettes a year, or thereabouts. Times that by something like 20 years, and what's that, seventy two thousand cigarettes.

Think about it.

Personally, I think any more than a couple of cigs a day is 'heavy'. I don't get through 10 cigs a week, let alone a day, on average. In fact I'm probbly smoking less than 20 a month I'd say.

Considering the cumulative effects, I'd still say that's too many. Food for thought. I'd ideally just like to have the odd ciggie now and then, on a night out as a little 'treat', that sort of thing. I know folk like that, and they're perfectly healthy.

I'm wondering how many people on here genuinely 'want' to give up. Putting aside the physical addiction side of things, it seems that many folk actually enjoyed smoking, yet are giving up cios it's bads for their health. Good reason enough.

But how many others have considered just cutting down, to say my level of smoking, or feeling that it's ok for them to have the odd ciggie now and then? Does it have to be complete abstinence?

I probably tried to give up 20+ times. Not sure of the main reasons for failure - weed sometimes played a big part though.

does not in any way sound like you actually 'wanted' to give up, tbh. Did you not consider cutting down instead of giving up completely?

Ho Hum, cheers for the tip. If I've not been by cob today I'll be heading for the pharmacy tonight to get some 'help'.

huws, go fella! Stress was one of my triggers too....as was getting out of bed, getting away from desk, getting home, getting drunk...Actually when you break it down, every feeling/emotion/event is a trigger. 😕

Elf, I'd put you in the 'recreational' smoker category, wish I could have done that but I'm a bit 'all or nuthin' 🙁

Elf - A "heavy" smoker, in my opinion, is 15+ per day.

You, at 10 per week, are an occasional smoker in my opinion.

I would go as far as to say that you smoke just as something to do and you enjoy it (I am sure this the case from having read your previous postings about smoking and you), which is fair enough.

Addiction is a strange disease, for me it is a progressive illness and by that I mean that if I started smoking one or two per day I would be back up to 10 a day within a week. It is all or nothing for me, so I chose nothing. Interestingly enough I am a heavy drinker, but I have been cutting that back recently without any ill effects and so I do not consider myself addicted to alcohol, but I have had serious problems with other substances in the past.

Prior to giving up this time you are probably correct in saying that I truly did not want to give up and that is where I failed. This time it was different as I had promised myself that I did not want to be a smoker when I reached 40. Also, up until a few years ago I did very little in the way of aerobic exercise and as a result the smoking wasn't a big issue, but I did find that the smoking was holding me back cycling-wise and that was another thing that helped me to give up.

Wouldn't life be boring if we were all the same?

fenred - I hope things improve for you. It will be interesting to hear what advice your pharmacist offers. I don't think we are alone in suffering such problems when having stopped smoking.

The only times I’ve ever given up for any length of time have been when I’ve just really not wanted to do it anymore, the cost and health benefits are nice but unimportant.

But how many others have considered just cutting down, to say my level of smoking, or feeling that it's ok for them to have the odd ciggie now and then? Does it have to be complete abstinence?

I can’t just have one, I’m either a smoker or a non-smoker. If I have one the chances are I’ll be back to full smoking within a few weeks. 🙁

All,

I am delighted to report that at 14.21 I had the 'call', squeaked my way to the gents and let nature take it's wonderful course. All I can say is eating half your body weight in satsumas, pistachio nuts and last nights Chilli seems to have had quiet an effect on ones metabolism. 😯

Thank you for your kind words of support throughout this difficult time. I am now left with a slight sweat on my brow and a MASSIVE nicotine craving 😳

well.. I'm still smoke free

I've had a couple of years of bungled attempts but it's going very smoothly this time around..

I have many different reasons for giving up.. no one stand alone reason that is any more or less valid or dominant than the others..

Health, fitness, curiosity, family, the challenge, pride, money.. blah blah blah
it doesn't matter which ideas you instill in yourself to help you succeed..

How long's it for you, Yunki? Great to hear you're quitting so smoothly! 8)

I quit 15 days ago. Can't say it's been smooth exactly, but it's getting better. The unexpected smell of smoke still initiates a major craving, but I'm trying to MTFU and keep my cool!

To everyone quitting right now (including Lady G * tsk tsk tsk * and Yeti * tsk tsk tsk *) I raise my glass and salute you!
