Can that car really not carry that weight? It's a hatchback type thing, so surely it can carry 800kg plus the driver?

We used to buy these 20kg bags of Basmati in Balham and take them round to my Nan's as she was too old and tiny to shift them. The bag would sit in the corner inside a plastoc bin. She loved it as it reminded her of her home in Bangalore.

Focus is about 400kg total occupant and cargo weight. The car he had can't be much more than that.

Is that all? Just that we've got more than 800kg into my neighbour's Berlingo, plus two people, and it's not much bigger than that vehicle.

It was fine. It gets used to transport heavy loads all the time, and runs ok.

Errr, it isn't fine, that's why plod/vosa etc get a bit uppity about it.

It increases braking distances, makes suspension failure/blowouts more likely, alters handling and may cause structural failure in axles/chassis.

It's more about being actually safe in an emergency and legal to drive with that load rather than just 'fine' though?
