I have been waiting patiently for the release of the new yam Ténéré 700 and it has apparently delivered on what I hoped it would
I want one so badly!
I have never bought a new vehicle, seems a ridiculous and foolish proposition to me but this bike is seriously tempting me.
Pre order cut off is 31st July, for the special price deal, with delivery expected in September!

I know it will de value, I know by February I will be able to pick up second hand one with barely any miles for less but...
Please talk me out of it (or into it)

If you can afford it then why not!? Life is too short not to follow your dreams!

Bikes seem to hold their value much better than cars too. HTH!

If it’s anything like the xt 660 then it will bore you.

Just get a ktboom and have done with the midlife crisis 😜 just hope and pray you do not end up with a Friday spanner monkey special.

Personally I would go for an Africa Twin as looks fairly tidy

Here’s a review for you, I’ll be expecting to hear that you’ve put your order in by the end of the week!
https://www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/reviews/bikes/yamaha/yamaha-tenere-700-2019-review-price-spec
I’ll take the red and white one, please. As does the reviewer, as it happens.
Nice looking bike, and a good price, if money became available it looks like exactly the sort of bike I would have been considering; always liked the Tenére, along with the Africa Twin, and the KTM’s.
Of course, those carry a significant price premium, the one thing that would have me considering the Africa Twin, if I could afford it, is the semi-automatic gearbox, with trigger shifters.

Ignore him on the XT660, i've had several and they were brilliant 🙂

(plus, why would a 700cc twin be anything like a 660 single ? Couldn't be more different if they tried)

New is an exceptional feeling, knowing it's not been thrashed or abused, knowing it's had the right run-in process given to it. Full warranty etc.

Being a KTM fanboi i'd always go KTM, but the equivalent is the 790Adv which is not only expensive but not blessed aesthetically too.

So i'd say, got for it.

Weeksy, 100% agree. I had a 660z for adv duties a couple of years ago and it was ace.
I ride old Brit and German bikes a lot, so anything is exciting compared to those!
I’d also usually gravitate to the ktm, due to its more aggressive power but was so disappointed when it was released, its bloody ugly, not my thing at all.

The tenere nails it, from all the reviews... it will be used for some fairly interesting expeds and a bit of commuting (when whichever oldbike I’m mucking about with is playing up)

I can’t help thinking that I’m better off waiting for someone to buy one, truck it up with extras and an akro exhaust, realise it’s not fit then and sell it to me for less than rrp, with all the extras too.... not sure I can wait that long, waited long enough for yam to finish the bloody thing already

I've been having similar thoughts, but until I can try one out for size / fit / comfort I'm hanging on to my cash - if you jump to get the pre-order special price and then find that it doesn't suit you then you won't be making a saving, you'll have made a mistake. My current plan: keep my eyes open for one of those "mistake" purchases.

Why is it likely to be a mistake though ? You'll have a decent idea by now on what it's like, it's sharing the MT-07 engine, so you can test ride that to see if the engine characteristics will suit etc.
Big companies don't make bad bikes now, they make bikes that fit the role they're intended. I can't see anything 'different' about the 700Ten that makes me think otherwise.

I'm with Weeksy, just buy it if you can afford it!

It's all well and good waiting and test riding one but how much do you really learn from a test ride? I've personally never bothered and not had a bad bike yet.

I quite fancied the Tenere 700 but didn't want to wait until it was released so got an Africa Twin instead!

This.

I can't really comment on the bike, as it is not my sort of thing, I'm more into nakeds than adventure bikes. But if it puts a smile on your face every time you even think of riding it then go for it. I went over my budget to get the Triumph Street Triple that I desperately wanted. Any regrets 3 months later? Not one. I would much rather have my bike than a few extra K in the bank.

Problem is, I can’t afford it... well I can but I shouldn’t
I’ll have to borrow cash to buy it and pay it off over the next couple of custom builds I finish and sell.
Weirdly, the wife says, just bloody buy it and stop talking about it

Tenere has a fairly high seat std, with a low seat option. Also a high rally seat (which I would opt for)

All the reviews I have saw of the press release tests, said it was brilliant.

I have a hankering after a small mild off road capable "Adventure bike"

I really, really like the look of the 790 Adventure, but the Tenere 700 is a lot cheaper and probably 90% as good.

Unlike Weeksy I like the look of the 790 with its ball bag fuel tank 🙂

I had no idea that this was due to be released and I must say I’m very tempted. Having just lost my 13 year old Multi due to unforeseen circumstances, this might make a suitable replacement. Thanks OP.

I had the same thing! After talking it over for about two months my wife dialled the dealership on her mob, asked for the salesperson and then passed the phone to me and told me to order it! Who was I to say no!

Have you bought it yet?

It looks lovely and I can't decide if I would buy the black or the 'Ice' version.

Seriously, have you bought it yet?

Buy it. I had a Tracer 700 for a year and loved that engine. My wife has an XSR700 and again, loves it. The Tenere 700 looks fantastic...

Black for me, no question!

Not bought it yet, haha
I’m now questioning wether I should buy a tricked out 1090r used instead for the same price... I think the yam is probably the better choice for me but I do love getting a bargain and there’s a few out there.

(I am just waiting for an email back from my local yam dealer though!!)

Love my 675R Street Triple, but if I ever traded it in it would probably be to make space for a 700 Tenere. At the moment I'm deliberately avoiding a visit to the dealers.
I still have my 1985 FZ750 & 1986 XT600,although they're both in the process of getting rebuilt.

That 44teeth review is pretty glowing and everyone says the MT07 is meant to be a cracker of an engine. Get it bought - as mentioned bikes will hold their value a lot better than cars and you'll know how its been ridden from new.

Would you actually ride it off road or is it just a comfortable tourer to you?

I think the bloke down the road from my office has one of those BMWs. There are two parked in the same spot, one looking the classic tourer and the other (his one) has been rebuilt very much in the cafe racer style. I like that style and I like what he has done to it very, very much.

If I get a Tenere it would be getting used on light gravel tracks similar to those in the above picture with the BMW.
Proper off road I'd go back on one of these holidays...

I’d love an r nine t, I have an r100 and have built several r65, 80 and 100’s but they are just too expensive for an average road bike for me

Got my pre order code, just got 7 days to use it and commit!!!

Coppice... I would definitely use it off road, uk, alps and Pyrenees... as a tool for getting deep/high into the mountains for running and climbing escapades... same as I have with other bikes of this ilk... this one just seems more balanced for my needs than most.

Thats is all I posted the r-nine pic for, since 98% of riding being on road.

Good to hear you’ll use off road too...

The r-nine is probably the only bike I particularly like in this current fashion phase we’re in.

I love it. Its got a great motor for covering distance, and it isnt festooned with a ton of expensive ride aids and electronics.

I retire in 20 months, and either one of these or the ktm 790 would be on my adventure short list:-)

That 44teeth video was filmed around my local hills, I live 20km from Tortosa and ride road and gravel trails that go for miles. When you buy it, book yourself in for a few days in it's natural environment Our b&b in Cataluna might have bought one myself by then!

You're welcome to ask anything. We've been here nearly 4 years and our only regret is that we didn't do it years ago. It's a great area for all outdoor activities, has a mild climate and property isn't expensive. I race mountainbikes and do quite a bit of bikepacking, MrsPB is into running and triathlon. We can do all this virtually from the door and the biggest plus for us is the area doesn't suffer from the Brits abroad tag.PM me and I'll send you my contact details.

I sold my Ten earlier this year. Just 3800 miles from new it was immaculate.

[img] [/img]

Just couldn't enjoy it, so I bought an old Transalp from the 90's instead.:)

So did you get one hooja?

I've just finished putting my '98 600 Transalp back together but keep getting tempted by Beta Alp 200's and KTM 990 ADV's

Re the Tenere 700,
I thought I wanted one too... but having ridden one (briefly), I've changed my mind. Visited the ABR festival a couple of weeks ago and queued up for almost two hours to get on the test ride list. The test ride was about 15 mins off road and 30 mins on road. The engine is an absolute belter but the bike as a package was disappointing. Off road the clutch was heavy and difficult to feather; on road the bike was very snatchy at low revs (definitely would need a remap). The whole bike creaked and felt cheap after only 3000km (Test ride miles I admit). It just felt adequate at best. I decided not to put a deposit down.
I'm coming at this from riding enduros (250 + 450), rallies (450+690) and 10k per year on a 1200 GSA... so quite a broad range! Funnily enough, I've got an Urban G/S similar to the one posted earlier... great bike on the road! 🙂

Can anyone explain to me the appeal of these fake offroad "tall tourers"?

I have ridden ages ago a super tenere and a BMW GS - both I found the riding position really uncomfortable, slow for the engine size and poor handling from the high COG. the bike I had at the time was a BMW RS

Obviously loads of folk love them but I do not get it..

I’ve had a few (R100gs, two varederos - one was a work bike) found them comfortable being over six feet tall - on the work varedero i would be out on it all day, good visibility in traffic and in the lanes, handle fine and plenty of stomp if not outright speed (although the varedero would show 130 on the clock) . If I was commuting big mileage I’d definitely consider one. There’s obviously quite a lot of bs pr around them but they still can be capable bikes.

it was the parachute riding position I found uncomfortable along with too much weight on the backside!

Obviously I am in a minority as BMW no longer make an RS - ie small full fairing and tucked riding position

Had an r1100rs, crossed Spain and then back over the Pyrenees on it with the then girlfriend on pillion- exceptionally capable bike, like a vfr for the slightly larger rider!

Tjagain- the tenere appeals to me because it is a has the 700 twin engine that has proved to be reliable flexible, fun, economical and it supposedly has genuine off road ability.
I haven't ridden an adventure bike myself but as I like road bikes and have had a lifetime obsession with anything two wheeled that goes off road. I'm thinking this could be a good all rounder to go to work on, do a bit of touring, and ride some green lanes etc .
I'm getting too old for Motocross/ enduro now.
I currently have an mt09 and my other thought is to swop this for a used tracer 700/900 and get a small trail bike - crf250l or similar for green lanes but wonder are there actually enough green lanes to even justify a trail bike any more? (Peak District)

Popped into the local Yamaha dealer near Tarragona about 4 weeks ago, they had a sold one awaiting collection which I was allowed to sit on. It's bigger than I'd expected and fit me pretty well, I'm 5'11" with 34" leg and could plant both feet well.Called in again 2 days ago, they now have a demo bike and I'm on a long list of people wanting to try it. Seems the waiting list is about 12 months so I'd better get saving.

Well... I ended up buying one and have had it now since early September. 2500 miles so far, with a considerable amount of those off-road.
I also do not see the appeal of these tall “fake” off-roaders tj, hence getting a bit excited about the potential of the T7 at concept.
Turns out it’s a belter and as close to a useable off-road tourer as you can get, along with the 790r
Yes, for true off-road a proper enduro is light years ahead in performance and suitability but so far, the T7 is pretty damn good and genuinely good fun off road, whilst still being fine for 300+miles a day getting to where you want to be.
It’s also hilarious on twisty B roads and shaping up to be the best all round, grin inducing bike I’ve ever ridden/owned.
Can’t really fault it, it gets better the more I ride it
Yes the initial throttle is a little snatchy, a bit of tweaking has solved that nearly and a remap, when available should reduce it further. But to be fair, it’s not really a problem.
It would be nice if it was a tad lighter but at what cost?
It’s pretty easy to get it to sub 200kg wet
It’s pretty damn good out of the box but it’s also clear Yamaha fully intended to produce something to a certain budget, that they knew folk would modify to their specific needs.
Mine is already well on its way to becoming a stripped back off-road adventure tool
Bloomin love it

Looks like next time in Spain will be a ride down to the alpujarras to meet the family at Easter and back via Pyrenees but doubt I’ll make it over as far as yours. You are definitely in my list to book a few nights at some point though for recce and ride
