We will be in touch
as it stands we got electric socket in house leading to one of those round weatherproof socket things in the garden. plugged into this (using 5 amp fuse) is a pump which sits in the pond. this pumps water up into a standalone 'non-electric' filter box, which just goes through 3 filters, a load of little stones, fills up, and drains back into pond.
we've been given a hozelock 3000 uvc electric filter, which will hopefully take the place of the standalone filter. but the problem is.......we now have 2 electric 'things' and only 1 round weatherproof socket thing that leads into the house.
so......is there such a thing as a splitter for those connections so both can be plugged in outside? or will i need another single that i have to trail back to the house and use an adaptor?
if they use a splitter should i put a bigger fuse in at the wall plug? 5 amp say?
i can take pics of anything and upload if anyones baffled by my 'round weatherproof socket' descriptions etc 🙂 as you can tell, im no sparky, hence the question 🙂
by the way, pond is only a small one. at a guess 6ft X 3ft and knee heightish deep.
cheers
Easy option would be to change the outside socket from a single to a double socket, where does the supply come from to this round socket? I think I know what you mean by "round socket" have fitted a few things similar. Is it an extension lead of sorts, or something mounted to the wall. Do you know what the combined load of the two pumps would be? I can't imagin it would be very much but you would need to ensure the cable to the round socket is large enough and robust enough.
It NEEDS to have RCD protection. Check out the MK masterseal range of weatherproof sockets, a double socket will be about £30(rough guess!) but they are the best on the market and give an amazing level of protection, given the choice I will not fit anything else.
Another option would be to make all your connections inside a good size weatherproof plastic enclosure. There are lots of ways to do what you ask but protection is the most important thing.
i knew id need to take photos 🙂
this is the connection from house to pump

this is the socket inside the house

as for the protection, the socket in the house is obviously connected to the mains which has an RCB(?) in the main box. and a 3 amp fuse in the plug. so if im changing the outside socket to a double, then im still getting the same protection arent i? i think 🙂
thanks a lot
nice pic of that pool by the way. i assume that IS a joke pic????? 🙂
What AceSparky said.
You can get these quite easily:

However, I'd be stuffing it all in a proper waterproof enclosure, which has the added benefit of allowing you to put transformers etc out by the pond for low-voltage lighting etc.
thanks a lot 🙂
er......where do you get waterproof enclosures from? 😉
RS.
grrrr it gets worse >-(
after unplugging to see what fuse was in there, the pump wont start again. tried different plugs and fuses, and chased it back to the 'male' connection on that outside socket 🙁
one wire broken. tried cutting it back to reconnect to the pin, and it keeps breaking again. seems a bit brittle.
one further question.......ive marked the terminal so i know which way round to connect back the live and neutral, but i cant see any way of getting it right in the first place. theres no L or N marked on them anywhere (2 round pins), but obviously if you got it wrong then you got a live terminal joining up with neutral in the 'female' connector.
so how do you know which is which??
