For new toy. I've fitted a couple of Sonys in the past and they've been great, but they look a little too [i]murdered out[/i] for the bimmer - bit too much Citroen saxo for my liking.
There's an Alpine with the same functionality which looks a little less bling, but I have no experience of them.
Any recommendations?

Alpine will be a better choice for SQ (Sound quality) and the one I'd get out of the two.
The Sony won't be bad of course, but likely not in the same league performance wise.
If it is just a head unit only into factory speakers then you'll probably not notice a great deal of difference so pick the one you like the look of that gives you the features needed.
Alpine stereos used to be amazing I doubt they have changed much
