Son has just passed his CBT and wants a 2nd hand 125 Honda CBF (or maybe Yamaha YBF)

I'm plenty handy enough at assessing and fixing cars but no idea about motorbikes.

So really how long do engines last if regularly serviced ?
How long do chains / sprockets last if looked after?
Are clutches easy to change?

Should I be afraid of a 2009/2010 25000 miler?

Not interested in new Chinese bikes or other vendors as this will simply confuse the situation.

Condition is all on a motorcycle, if it looks knackered it probably is.

Both choices sound solid. Bits will rust, get some ACF-50 and keep an eye on it.

You don't see that many 125s with high miles, I'd avoid it personally, I really don't think the newer ones are built to last forever. I had a Varadero 125, which was a big solid beast (for a 125), in the end everything started falling to bits though.

Not sure regarding chain and sprocket wear. I changed my chain and sprocket after a harsh winter, when they looked pretty destroyed, it's a very quick job to do.

I'm not suggesting this for you, but tragically if I was buying again I'd just get a Chinese supermoto, I had one for a while and regret selling it. It had zero power, which meant you really had to conserve momentum, great fun. All the spare parts cost nothing and were easy to fit, an engine replacement would have been £300!
