I currently have a Transporter T4 which only has 3 seats and I need 4. So while I am considering an ex-AA T4, what is so wrong with a transit? They seem bigger and cheaper, or am I missing something?

Cheers

There's nothing wrong with them, they're a good van.

Nothing wrong with them at all. People who buy 'Bike Vans' are reluctant van buyers, they don't want their van to be van-like so what they want are vans that aren't commonly seen being used as vans.

The premium you pay for a VW is partly deserved reputation, but mostly a consiquence of there being more potential non-van buyers wanting to buy second had vw's than there are van-buyers buying them new. (by a massive factor)

Transits are ergonomically very good - excellent relation between the volume they carry and the space they take up on the road. They're comfy, easy to drive. Great

They're not as hardy as a sprinter - my sprinter has 270,000 miles on the clock and still looks and feels new, but with a transit you sit a bit lower and feel a bit more car-like than in a sprinter. That car-like quality used to be the VW's selling point. But I like the truck-like position in the sprinter.

EDIT
I should add that my van is a van-van, not a bike-van. But I don't own a car so the bikes get chucked in the back sometimes. To be honest if I owned a car, for anything other than short trips I'd sooner throw the bikes in a car than the van
