So this is what happened, I'm on my way to work on the bike, riding along a pretty busy road in the suburbs of Auckland and a police car pulls up from speed across the road in front of me then some guy legs it past and the copper gets out of the car and gives chase (cops in NZ generally are in the cars on their own), he rugby tackles the guy at the kerb and a fight ensues between the two of them and I'm riding past with them no more than about 6ft away and the coppers getting a bit of hiding.
So I'm thinking should I stop, this is SO close I can't pretend I'm not here and it's not happpening, and the cop is losing and I could be late for work if I stop.
Initially I ride past, then I'm looking back over my shoulder and it's not getting any better. So I go back to help the cop, grab the guy's arms and stop him punching the cop, then get him in a half-nelson kneel on his back and the policeman recovers a bit and get the cuffs on and by this time a couple of other blokes have come over to help and more police turn up.
Now I'm absolutely certain if I'd been in my car I wouldn't have got involved. I guess that had that been the case I wouldn't have been able to get so close to the incident in the first place but just out of interest what would you do?

I like to think I would have helped the cop - I haven't really got the skills tho. You did the right thing I am sure

I'd like to say 'same as you' - in reality though i'm a soft git - guess I'd have stopped at a safe distance and called for back-up..... wet i know but I'm honest with it....

Fair play to you for sorting the job out....

I'd probably do the same, but maybe with less hesitance, i'm only wee but did something similar a few weeks back, almost popped the blokes shoulder though and at that point he calmed down...

I believe too many people these days are either arrogant to others plight, afraid for their own safety or reliant on the fact someone else will help out.
Sad but true..

Well down you, hope yo used a little more force than was necessary 😉

I would have just stood on the sidelines cheering the copper on, bit of positive reinforcement to help him get the upper hand 😉

Where was this in Auckland? I used to live in Elerslie and it kicked off in the service station at the bottom of the high street. This drunk guy started swinging at the island guy behind the counter. I just grabbed him and bundled him out. Amazing thing is the Island boy was just a huge human being. He could have pounded this drunk but just wasnt into any form of physical confrontation.

I think you did a good thing
