Cheers everybody. Spent a few hours at hospital today...in between football, summer fayre, roller disco, clearing up house, doing washing ๐Ÿ˜

We read the thread together and the support shown from here and the real world has been phenomenal. Truly humbling. It has really helped, thank you all so much.

Don't know what I'd do without my mates - virtual and physical. Thanks.

All the best for your wife's recovery and make sure you take the time to look after yourself.

If in a wee while you have any questions about the physio that your wife might get, give me a shout and i'll ask the wife.

I was in a stroke rehab unit after I was poorly, and the progress some of the stroke victims made was absolutely amazing! Don't lose hope.

Having just got back from Hols with my kids and missus who is 6 weeks away from delivering number 3, this kind of post makes me feel a whole bunch of love towards folks who's lives are turned upside down in such a dramatic way.

Best wishes from all of us over here, you to you guys over there.

Best of luck with her recovery.

Sounds like an atrial septal defect (ASD)
We were fixing them yesterday at my hospital.
3 young people whose first symptoms was a stroke.
It's easily fixed, 1/2 hour procedure done from the top of the leg.
Home the same day.

Stay positive.

All power and support to you mate - and your wife.

In terms of her rehab and recovery, while she is still in hospital make sure they tell you and her exactly what they're doing and why. Ask them what the rehab plan is and what the immediate goals are. Push to ensure that all the therapies she gets are from neuro-trained therapists, and that they focus on the cogntive, emotional and psychological side, as well as on her physical recovery.

When she comes home, make sure that she will still get input from a neuro-trained community rehab service. Don't let them ditch her and say it's now just down to social services - but also make sure social services do a full assessment, of your and your kids' needs as well as hers (statutory requirement that they should do so) and do go about providing any equipment and adaptations that are needed, as well as any care and support. Tell them if there are financial issues, and make sure you get good benefits advice.

Things may take a while, especially the fatigue, but they will keep on changing and improving for months, even years. That's typical in terms of strokes and brain injuries. As TJ says, the more positive her attitude and yours, the better things will go. Make sure you have time and support for you - very important............and don't let anyone bullshit you or fob you or her off!

Hope this helps. I work with people who have had brain injuries, haemorrhages and strokes, so if you have any questions or just want to sound off, my email is in my profile.

Good luck!

Thanks again all, just off to the hospital now.

Will have a good read of the more detailed responses when I have a bit of time tonight....and in the meantime...Fred - you still have time to add your customary 'wunundred' ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thanks again, means a great deal.

Just found this thread.Hope shes doing well. How well is she walking/lifting things etc?

My mother had a stroke years ago.I noticed her walking a bit odd up the hallway of the house as if she was half asleep and wondered why she was trying to walk whilst still half asleep.Something seemed a bit odd.

I remember checking how she was late on in the eve and i didnt get much response.Kind of like when you wake someone up and you get that first grunt!.. only they dont seem to wake up much more.

This is what makes you think.

I think i called the hospital at the time and told the woman that i think my mother may have had a stroke. She didnt seem interested and told me that she couldnt arrange for an ambulance to come around unless the person agreed to this. It was nuts and i sat there after the phone call with no idea what to do.I said to my father that i think she might have had a stroke and we left it until the morning to see what she felt like.(at the time, maybe it was the morning when i said to my father that i think she had a stroke)
She went to hospital that morning and i think she was in there for around 7 weeks. To get someone out of bed and tell them they are going to hospital while they are telling you to leave them alone as they dont need to go to hospital is a tricky business!

She made a good recovery but i wish i knew more at the time. This was many years ago now and its mentioned a lot more on TV etc to be aware of it/what to do.She still has a shaky hand, the other one isnt too bad at all.A bit unstable on her feet but like so many people, the weight she has put on doesnt help one bit.I think shes on about 12 pills a day.

If anyone else experiences something similar,do something about it as quick as you can.Time is everything.

I'm 34 and had a stroke on 13 June 2011 (my 34th birthday). My speech went, my mouth drooped I was very dizzy and had left side weakness in my arms and legs. MRI on brain and neck showed all clear, normal BP, low cholesterol, fit and active mountain biker. A bubble test (where they inject bubbles into the heart during an echo-cardiogram) indicated that I have a hole in the heart and am now waiting for the invite to get it fixed. I had fully recovered from the effects of the stroke after 3-4 weeks and am now cycling to work again :). I'm not allowed to hit the jumps or DH until I'm fully fixed though :(.

It was one of the scariest things Ive ever been through and so I can fully understand what it must've been/is like for you both.

All the best to both of you. Hopefully she has fully bounced back.

Steve.

My wife had a stroke at work a few months ago (Elf - she says hi! And no you can't have her bike).
Probably the worst phone call I've ever had at work - try to keep your foot off the accelerator when you're on the way to the hospital after you've had that news. It can't be done!!
Anyway, she's having the last of a whole bunch of tests next week when an ECG will be shoved down her throat under sedation.
Everything seems to be ok now, thank the Lord above. ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, hope your good lady gets 100% better soon. It's a scary thing to happen when you are relatively young (my wife was 35) but it's more common than you may realise and people get better from it all the time.
