Forget the legality. Especially if its a private carpark but isn't it FUN. Especially relearning how power on/off effects the car on bends but at waaay slower speeds 😀
Or is too taboo a subject on STW? 8)
BAN-BAN-BAN .....
Too much fun to be dealt with on here - as a preference id go for a front wheel drive J turn. A tasty balance of power and handbrake ...
I used to have a road legal quad which slid around all over the place in the wet. (never got a chance to try in the snow. Wish I still had it)
I was a member of a quad bike forum and you NEVER EVER admitted to any shenannigans unless you wanted a dressing down by the big hitters 😯
it was all about giving quads a bad name apparently.
it was all about giving quads a bad name apparently.
Was it run by Jon Bon Jovi?
Try hanbrake turns in a Citoen C5 ,Front wheel handbrake.
Bearing in mind you nearly crapped yourself when we asked you to park your lease car next to a nettle, I'm amazed you're handbrake turning it!
Very good cougar 🙂
When I was an HGV driver I used to deliver to an ICI place near Blackpool with a multiple football pitch sized car park with no lamp posts or bollards
Got there one night after 6pm and the car park was empty and six inches of fresh snow on the ground.
You won't believe the fun to be had with a twenty ton 30ft long wagon in the snow 😀
4x4 with winter tyres, 4 wheel slides into the bends with the knowledge that the grip is there when you need it...
Khani, been there. Fun aint it.
It is great fun! Serious side to it though - whenever I change my car I always take it to a local car park to see how it behaves after the first snow. Teaches you a hell of a lot about car dynamics and how different tyre sizes/profiles/compounds, driving wheels etc... make to controlling your car safely in the winter.
"this is how you control a slide"
BANG, had to change the wheel in the snow, new wheel/ tyre and a massive ding in the kerb. OH still reminds me 😳
Haha yep I've been on late finishes at work all weekend so when i leave there's an empty car park with fresh snow to treat myself to, so much fun 🙂
I'd imagine it would be great fun I've never done such a thing since my emergency driver training. Honest. 😳
I'd imagine doing it in an old tennis court in the grounds of a hospital in very old Talbot would result in the back axle falling off some weeks later.
Khani, been there. Fun aint it.
Oh yes! 😀 I used half a tank though, nearly run out on the way back 😳
Bonus points for managing it with a foot operated parking brake...
I used to do it in the lorry. An eighteen ton handbrake turn. 😀
Lasty, no handbrakes in a J turn. You might do better knowing the correct technique before you have an accident.

Despite having owned numerous land rovers, some with v8's, and various other cars, I can honestly say that nothing is as much fun as a quad in the snow. Switchable 2 or 4 wheel drive gives the best of both worlds. Loads of rear wheel hooligan fun, doughnuts, fishtailing etc. Then stick it in 4x4 for 4 wheel power slides, or to get out of the ditch you just ended up in 😀
I also learnt never to buy an ex Police RangeRover after getting a fully loaded Scania 38ton fridge unit towed up the M62 death valley bit in the snow, it did it though 😯
It was a Tesco wagon as well, so it had the horses...
Arghh, I have button operated handbrake. And if its activated over 7mph then ABS takes control into full stop. Epic fail.
When I was a youngster I was a storeman for British Gas in Elgin , I managed to handbrake the van into a BG lorry then the following day put the van into a ditch .
(Big sigh) 'Ahhh great days'. 😀
Its almost scary that you can 180 your car on snow very easily.
Pook its covered in scratches now. Going to get chipsaway out to tidy up then park/leave it at the back of the house whilst I get a big old estate.

😀
Better to push your car into sliding rather than using your handbrake - you will learn far more about driving in the snow and ice that way.
I've only had this car since Thursday - not plucked up the courage yet!!
And anyway, how do it get it to power slide in a car park with a DSG gearbox??
Rachel
Kick down to 1st manually? Turn drive in a left arc then boot the throttle hard mid arc?
Or drive in a circle on full lock and throttle suddenly
I handbrake turn my car on to my drive
Quite often (when it snows) see the police having fun on local supermarket car park
Jamj1974 totally agree but handbrake at lower speeds gets used to the shock of a car letting go. No handbrake needs more speed...
I remember last year handbraking into a space at McDonalds then remembering that the Car is now a fully stickered up Driving School car 😳
Used to Handbrake all the time regardless of snow or not, had a Mk 4 Escort pulled the Handbrake up and it came away from the floor leaving it attached just with the cable.
Awkward.
Craigy-xxl.
Might not be a J-turn then ... 🙄
Reverse fast-tickle the handbrake-boot it whilst swinging the steering round-into to second and boot it forwards .
Worked today, an accident free manouver - Just hope the security cameras were looking elsewere 😯
Eek shags tyres on tarmac plus wear on suspension laterally!
I used to do this a lot on wet grass (airfields) it should be compulsory for all drivers to legally, and safely **** about on slidey surfaces
I always tell my kids to find somewhere quiet and do a bit of car sledging when it snows so they won't be surprised when they get a bit skiddy on normal roads
+1. Kerbs can royally **** cars nevermind meeting another driver (shudder)
I had about 3hrs fun in my wife's MX5 a few years ago in a DIY store carpark
It was only the week later when the snow had gone that I noticed a load of raised kerbs in one bit to direct people's parking. No idea how I managed not to hit one
Could have tankslap/flipped you but snow raised/covered 😀
When I first passed I went round a corner too quick in the wet slid and started to grip but still tank slapped the kerb. Anymore force and the wheels would have folded and/or rolled the car!
Afraid I can't confirm the handbrake ability of our Audi Hora.
Could have tankslap
Have you ever ridden a motorbike? Cars do not get tank slappers.

Great advice - very sensible to do this! No replacement for experience when a car begins to slide.

Good point!
I thought that particular video was his engine siezing not a tankslaper (although it lead to one)?
Although agreed, a tankslapper can't happen in a car. It's the bike equivalent of an out of control Scandinavian flick, steering goes left, weight pushes straight on, bike falls right, steering swings right, weight goes foreward/left, steering flops over, etc. The closest thing in a car is overreacting to a skid, and skidding the other way, then again, and again, but the difference is it's the driver doing it, on a bike it's out of control.
My bad/wrong descriptive. Mine was slide- 2 wheels hit kerb.
Sambob. I could have driven my bro in laws 2.0T Seat Leon on Uniroyal rainmasters to Surrey/Brighton next weekend but instead I chose my Citroen C1 on Mud+Snow tyres. A very good car (but noisy) 😉
I spent an hour in a carpark in the Cairngorms with a couple of nervous drivers in a 17 seat transit minibus a few weeks back. As above, getting used to the surprise when the back starts going (usually) or the front does not turn in. Learning how to add, sustain or reduce power and steer in/out of slides.
Ace FUN, but also great learning for them imo.
Audi's got mud and snow tyres, it's brilliant in the snow. Was better than our Discovery 2 until we got proper tyres for it.
Win 8)
Selectable 4wd for the win .
Fronteras rwd until tou ask it not to be
MAX BEANS. Round an empty tesco on the way home from skiing
What you need is a 92 plate Audi 80 quatro 2.8 v6, a Subaru Impreza turbo and a Sierra Saphire 4.2Litre V8 conversion all mixed together with a dose of unused Airfield and a healthy dose of snow. Drac will know of a place called Brunton Airfield in Northumberland. What a good few days they were in about 2002.
Shame its properly shagged now with pot holes.
Been teaching skid control to my pupils in a private car park:)
So much fun but hopefully it will save them should they get careless!!
4WD with snow tyres on the front and not on the back FTdriftasticW 😆
Also... those slip roads onto the motorway that do a 270deg downhill curve. 😉 😯
I chose my Citroen C1 on Mud+Snow tyres. A very good car (but noisy)
Aygo/C1/107. Some of the best cars out there. I have had massive fun in an Aygo, all whilst obeying the Rules of the road and common sense. Small and light, with a willing engine that loves to be revved, narrow tyres that reach the limit easily. So much enjoyment to be had.
I drive a 1 series BMW - I do lots of sliding about at the moment - whether I want to or not - fortunately in my young days I drove a Datsun pick up and spent a lot of time throwing around supermarket car parks in the snow – learnt lots about throttle and steering control– still like to have a ‘refresher’ when ever the opportunity arises
Couple of years back the wife caught me power sliding the 3 series touring around DIY stores car park after she had popped in for something –she was less then impressed
I've a tasty s bend on the way into the quiet close i live on, snap of hand break (Scandinavian flick) i can happily drift into, during and out. Had a round of applause when coming back laden with kids and shopping earlier today 😀
B&Q has had a good thrash over the past few days as well!
