A problem that most cyclists are unlikely to face!

I saw an Eastern Brown when I was in Australia - thankfully not that close up!
We also had a big python crossing the road in front of us so we stopped and watched it while it dropped off the road into the creek by the side.

Not so common to see a snake at this time of year.

Pretty sure I’ve shared this before. A carpet python I met on my commute home a few years ago. I put the Cotic between us to get some photos and it struck the head tube.

Spain - this is a Ladder Snake, it was basking by the side of the road. Maybe a metre or so in length.

Sadly i ran over an Adder last summer . By the time i realised it was a basking snake it  it was too late. It did slither off.

Sometimes I appreciate living in the UK with wildlife that's benign...

Very nearly ran over an adder on Tuesday in Glen Muick. Thankfully I was going uphill, so it had plenty of time to react and recoil into the heather.

Quite common, unlike the biologically-unrelated step-ladder snake

Sometimes you really appreciate how safe the UK is, as regards wild animals!

Last summer I rescued a slowworm off the road, after spotting it while cooling down at the end of a ride.

Then you tread on a weaver fish and wonder why no one warned you.

On the other hand i survived a swan attack without breaking an arm.

Other than horseflies, wasps, hornets, and of course, Scotland’s national bird, the midge!

Well, I occasionally see warnings about wearing some sort of footwear on the beach, more for protection from human made hazards, like glass, but weaver fish do get mentioned. I can remember being on holiday many years ago, I think it was probably in Wales, Freshwater West rings a bell, and there was a little lass quite excited because she’d caught a fish in her little net, and had it in her plastic bucket she was building sand castles with, so I went to have a look, and she’d caught a weaver fish! 😳

I recognised it immediately, because it had its fin raised with the spines, so, without wishing to panic her or her family, I carefully pointed out that it could hurt her, and it needed to go back in the water, so we found a big, deep rock pool and let it go in there, but nobody else knew what it was, it’s only because of my interest in all sorts of animals, fish, insects, etc that I immediately knew that they can cause quite a lot of pain! Only one I’ve ever seen, I think it was about 6, 7cm long, but it was decades ago!

I rescued this little critter from the road in Australia. It was walking across, narrowly missed by a truck so I stopped, picked it up and took it to the side it was headed in.

It's a Side-Necked Turtle.

Its neck is on the side!

Also, look at the little eyes! 😍 It slid into its shell when I picked it up but once in the ground again, it peered out then legs, neck and everything came out and off it went.

That’s very cool.

We found a similar one on our driveway a couple of years ago. Maybe a saw shelled turtle…
